The faculty will discuss the application of neck sonography for evaluation of thyroid and parathyroid pathology and the assessment of the postoperative neck for thyroid cancer recurrence. Current surgical and medical management recommendations for nodular thyroid disease, thyroid carcinoma, and hyperparathyroidism will also be reviewed. Special topics to be discussed include the interpretation of fine needle aspiration results using the Bethesda classification, the diagnosis and management of small thyroid carcinomas, and small residual or recurrent nodal metastases and the role of molecular testing in the management of thyroid nodules with follicular cytology. The course will include a live scanning of patient volunteers with thyroid and parathyroid disease as well as a hands on session where participants will be able to learn how to perform sonographic examination of the neck and receive hands on instruction in the technique of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration using phantoms. Target Audience This course is designed to meet the needs of endocrinologists, radiologists, sonologists, head and neck surgeons, and other health care professionals with an interest in thyroid and parathyroid disease as assessed by sonography. The course is structured to educate both those with basic sonographic knowledge as well as those with more advanced experience in neck sonography. Course Objectives On completion of this course, the participant should be able to: Discuss the sonographic features of thyroid nodules that are most predictive of malignancy and benignity. Describe the sonographic features of abnormal lymph nodes and thyroid cancer recurrence in the neck. Recognize the sonographic features of diffuse thyroid disorders. Discuss the indications, technique, and results of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of the thyroid. Describe the sonographic features and location of abnormally enlarged parathyroid glands. Describe the technique and indications for percutaneous ethanol ablation. 2 QUESTIONS? CALL THE AIUM AT 800-638-5352 OR 301-498-4100
