Objectives Discuss the dangers of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids Discuss overdoses and overdose deaths Discuss the magnitude of the opioid crisis in Fort Wayne

Prescription Opioids Some of the most sought after street drugs OxyContin and other strong opioids can go for $30 or more per pill on the street We are regularly seeing methadone and occasionally Suboxone at drug raids

Prescription Opioids The latest trend is the manufacturing of lookalike prescription drugs Dealers are manufacturing drugs to look like prescription medications Sometimes these fake medications contain Fentanyl, which is attributed to overdose deaths

Fake Prescription Drugs Counterfeit Oxycodone Pills Containing U-47700.

Fake Prescription Drugs

Fake Prescription Drugs The important thing for drug abusers to remember is that there is no guarantee that what they are buying is actually a pharmaceutical grade drug It s a complete roll of the dice

Prescription Pills In 2016 FWPD Vice & Narcotics seized 3,093 pills In 2017 FWPD Vice & Narcotics seized 3,597 pills

Heroin We know that a majority of people who abuse heroin started out abusing prescription opioids We also know that demand has greatly increased for heroin in the last few years A heroin abuser can be any age, race or sex Heroin abusers come from ALL walks of life

Heroin Drug poisoning deaths have become the leading cause of injury death in the United States More than Car Crashes and Gunshot Wounds combined! Each day in the U.S. over 175 people die as a result of a drug overdose

Fentanyl Fentanyl is a Schedule II synthetic opioid that is approximately 100 times stronger that morphine, and was developed for the pain management and treatment of cancer patients There were over 700 deaths related to fentanyl between late 2013 and early 2015 Clandestinely produced fentanyl is sometimes added to heroin to increase its effects, or mixed/diluted and sold as heroin

Fentanyl Two Types: Pharmaceutical Grade Patches, Suckers and Liquid Clandestinely Produced Powder

Carfentanil Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid used as a large animal anesthetic Typically used to sedate Elephants DEA released a bulletin warning about Carfentanil It is 100 more times powerful than Fentanyl It has been found in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and is responsible for an even bigger spike in overdose deaths

Heroin/Fentanyl Trends Still seeing Fentanyl in Heroin Drug Seizures Buying Straight Fentanyl on a Regular Basis Fentanyl & Carfentanil a danger to First Responders Allen County Had First Carfentanil Drug Poisoning Death Occurred April 25, 2017 Not Confirmed Until May 23, 2017 Carfentanil is 100 times more powerful than Fentanyl 2 nd Carfentanil Death November 26, 2017

Heroin/Fentanyl/Carfentanil

Heroin/Fentanyl It would appear that we are in the midst of an opioid epidemic! While synthetic cannabinoids and meth are still prevalent in Fort Wayne, the overwhelming abuse trend in the last year has been heroin/fentanyl In the span of a couple of days over the summer of 2015, there were 5 overdose deaths that we know of Three from the same dealer

Seriousness of Addiction In July of 2015, we had three drug poisoning deaths in a 24 hour period Three people all bought what they thought was heroin from the same dealer at the same time The three people left, the first person used what they bought and died immediately The other two left their dead friend behind, went their separate ways, used the same substance they saw their friend die from, and both also died

Heroin/Fentanyl Estimated 50,000 people in Allen County abusing Opioids Estimated 4,000 to 6,000 people in Allen County abuse Heroin Average age of Heroin abuser in Allen County is 40
