Lecture Series: Pregnancy Stephanie Mitelman, MA, CSE Certified Sexuality Educator Teacher's Notes Information Slides Review Quiz 1

Teacher's Notes Welcome! These slides will help you teach your class basic information about menstruation and pregnancy. Many of the slides feature interactive activities that will keep your students engaged. The informational slides teach relevant components of female and male anatomy, menstruation, and the trimesters of pregnancy. 2

Teacher's Activity Demo (To be done before class) This activity demonstration will allow you to become familiar with the types of interactive tools used in this presentation. Please test this out before you get into the classroom and make sure that the slides are set up so that all answers are hidden. 1 'Drag to reveal' answers for anatomy fill in the blanks or multiple choice explanations. Look for the grey dashed box, and drag it out to reveal the answer. For best results, drag by the dashed outline. For example, STI = 2 Erase to reveal. For the true/false pre test, some fill in the blank activities and multiple choice quiz section, the correct answer is revealed by using the eraser tool to erase a white pen mark which has been used to cover the answers in advance. You can practice by erasing to reveal our logo here, and then covering it back up with a broad stroke white pen mark. When you close the presentation, do not save. The next time you open the presentation, it will be ready to go! 3

Male Reproductive Organs THE TESTICLE is when sperm is released from a boy's testicles. Sperm floats in a liquid, and the mixture of liquid and sperm is called. Nocturnal emissions (also called 'wet dreams') happen when a boy is asleep. It's the body's way of making room for new, mature sperm to be stored in the testicle. 6

Male Reproductive Organs EJACULATION: THE JOURNEY OF THE SPERM During ejaculation, sperm (shown in BLUE) leave the TESTICLE. 7

? Review OF THE JOURNEY OF THE SPERM Erase above the line to reveal the correct answer! Sperm is produced in the. testicle Sperm gets protein from the. prostate Sperm is ejaculated through the. urethra Sperm gets sugar from the seminal vesicle. Sperm gets fluid from the Cowper's. gland 12

The Menstrual Cycle and Fertility The menstrual cycle can be anywhere from 20 42 days long. 1/4 of the cycle is spent in menstruation (bleeding), 1/4 in ovulation, and 1/2 pre menstrual. The fertile period happens between ovulation and pre menstrual. Hormonal birth control methods (like the Pill) prevent ovulation. While taking these, the menstrual cycle continues without the fertile period. 13

Female Reproductive Organs PRE OVULATION Girls are born with hundreds of thousands of eggs. At puberty, they begin to mature, and one is released every 20 42 days. The menstrual cycle begins with the release of an egg, and ends with either menstruation or pregnancy. VAGINA OVARY UTERINE LINING CERVIX EGG FALLOPIAN TUBE Drag blue labels to fill in the diagram. Then reveal the answer key. 14

PREGNANCY: 2nd Trimester WEEKS 13 26 The baby is getting bigger and stronger every week. Doctors can tell the sex of the baby with an ultrasound test. 20

TWINS! IDENTICAL TWINS = 1 SPERM + 1 EGG The egg then splits into two fetuses. They develop at the same time in the same sac inside the uterus. Identical twins are the same gender and look very much alike. FRATERNAL TWINS = 2 SPERM + 2 EGGS Develop at the same time in two different sacs in the uterus. Fraternal twins can be two different genders and may not look alike at all! REVIEW QUIZ 23

Seminal Vesicle Erase to the left of the multiple choice options to reveal the correct answer. Drag the box to reveal explanation. 2. Choose the MOST CORRECT statement about sperm: a. Semen is only made of sperm. b. Sperm are produced in the testicles. c. There is no sperm in pre ejaculate. d. Sperm die within one day. 24

Girls are born with all their eggs and release one on average every 28 days. There are 2 ovaries in the body, on the right and left sides. ? True or False? drag and drop 1. The fallopian tube is the tube that carries sperm from the testicle to the tip of the penis. Answer: The fallopian tube is the tube that carries an egg from the ovary to the uterus in females. 2. The labia are the "lips" that surround the vaginal opening, clitoris and urethral opening. Answer: 3. In males, sperm are produced in the prostate gland. Answer: Sperm are produced in the testicles. The prostate gland contributes protein to semen to 'feed' the sperm. Baby Risks Stephanie Mitelman, MA, CSE Certified Sexuality Educator Teacher's Notes Classroom Activity Review Quiz 1

Teacher's Notes Welcome! These slides will help your class understand which sexual activities can lead to pregnancy and which do not. This interactive activity will help cement information from previous anatomy and reproduction lessons. In the activity section, there are five slides with five statements, each in moveable boxes. We suggest dividing the class into five groups to come up to the board and classify the statements as either HIGH, POSSIBLE, or NO RISK for pregnancy. The teacher can the use the eraser tool to reveal whether the students placed each statement in the correct category. An explanation can be revealed by dragging out the grey dashed box. Please see the Activity Demo for more details. Activity Demo (to be done before class) 2

Baby Risks Activity Procedure 1) Introduce the topic and review prior knowledge as necessary. 2) Assign students into 5 groups for the activity. 3) Each group can approach the board and read aloud the sexual activity statements from the moveable boxes. The students can then arrange them into HIGH, POSSIBLE or NO RISK categories. 4) The teacher (or the students) can then reveal the answers by erasing the left side of each moveable box. 5) Drag the dashed grey box to reveal more information. 6) Prepare for the quiz. The quiz can be completed in groups, as a full class vote, or as an individual written assessment. 7) Reveal answers to the quiz and discuss. 6

? Review Quiz! Erase to the left of the multiple choice options to reveal the correct answer! 1. Which of these activities are HIGH RISK for pregnancy? a. Ejaculating inside the vagina b. Vaginal sex with no condom c. Condom slipping off inside the vagina after ejaculation d. All of the above 2. Which of these factors INCREASES the risk of pregnancy? a. Having sex with a condom b. Choosing not to have intercourse c. Having sex when the woman is ovulating d. Using hormonal contraception 12

FASD Fact or Fiction: Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Stephanie Mitelman, MA, CSE Certified Sexuality Educator Teacher's Notes Classroom Activity Review Quiz 1

Teacher's Notes Welcome! These slides will help you teach your class about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) through an interactive activity, where students can demonstrate what they already know and have the opportunity to reason in small groups. The content focuses on the prevention of FASD and addresses negative stereotypes. In the activity section, there are five slides with five statements, each in moveable boxes. We suggest dividing the class into five groups to come up to the board and classify the statements as either fact or fiction. The teacher can the use the eraser tool to reveal whether the students placed each statement in the correct category. An explanation can be revealed by dragging out the grey dashed box.
