NERVOUS SYSTEM MODULE Academic Year 2004-2005 Study Guide

CNS Objectives At the end of this course, students should recognize the followings: 1. Histological structure of the brain meninges and the supporting neuroglial tissue. The histological variations of the spinal cord at the cervical, thoracic and lumber segments. The histology of medulla oblongata, pons, mid brain, the cerebellum and that of the cerebrum, also cerebral cortex and different cranial nerves. 2. The parts of the central nervous system and the terms used in the neuroanatomy. The spinal cord and the internal and external features of the brain stem and the different parts of the cerebellum.the thalamus, hypothalamus, subthalmus, and pineal body.the surfaces, borders and lobes of the cerebrum.. The absoprtion and circulation of CSF and the different pathways. 3. The synaptic transmission and initiation of impulses in sense organs. The neural connections, pathways and monosynoptic and polysynaptic reflexes. The muscle spindles and analysis of their function. The describtion of how posture and movement are regulatedand the autonomic reflexes. The anatomic connections between the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland and the functional significance of each connection. The structure and function of the limbic system and functions of the reticular formation. The special senses that deals with the vision, hearing, smell and taste sensations. 4. The inflammatory reactions, which affect the nervous system including different types of meneingitis, encephalitis and brain abscess. Vascular diseases of the nervous system including intracranial haemorrhage, cerebral aneurysms, cerebral infarction and hydrocephalus. Intracranial tumours and its classifications whether it is benign or malignant, primary or secondary. Tumours of the peripheral nerves and its classifications whether arising from the cranial nerves schwannoma or peripheral nerves neurofibroma and peripheral neuritis. 5. Drugs affecting the CNS may act presynaptically by influencing the production, storage or termination of action of neurotransmitters. Other agents may activate or block postsynaptic receptors. The discussion of each drug involves its action, indications and adverse effects.the topic of drug addiction is stressed to attract the students attention to this sociomedical problem. ١
