Review bth Circulatin and Digestin dances ne sectin at a time. As students are dancing each study, reinfrce vcabulary and functin f each part f the system. The Digestin Dance Ø The Dugie dance (teeth, muth, saliva). Chant: In the muth, in the muth. Where the teeth chew up the fd. Ø The Bdy Wave (esphagus) Chant: The esphagus (beats 1-2), the esphagus (beats 3-4). Where fd ges dwn the tube. Ø The Rlling Paddle Turn (stmach) February 4, 2013 2

Chant: In the stmach (beats 1-2). In the stmach (beats 3-4). Where the acid breaks dwn the fd (beats 5-8). Ø The Sway (small intestine) Chant: Small intestine (beats 1-2), small intestine (beats 3-4). Where nutrients enter the bld (beats 5-8). Ø The Jazz Square (large intestinr) Chant: Large intestine (beats 1-2), large intestine (beats 3-4). Where the water is absrbed (beats 5-8). Ø Fur Shapes (cln) Chant: In the cln (beats 1-2), in the cln (beats 3-4), eliminatin (beats 5-6), eliminatin (beats 7-8). The Circulatin dance Ø Arrange students as the rgans (heart, lungs, bdy and bld) and mve thrugh the bld vessels in a circular pathway. We are circulating thrugh the right side f the heart t the lungs were we pick up xygen. We are circulating back t the left side f the heart. We are circulating t the bdy where we given xygen t the cells and we receive carbn dixide. We are circulating back t the right side f the heart and back t the lungs where we trade carbn dixide and get anther xygen. MODELING (Presentatin f new material, demnstratin f the prcess, direct instructin) (30 minutes) Arrange the All Systems, G! (see attached diagram) The students in the circulatry system dance (13) will maintain their place marked with the tape. Divide the remainder f the class int tw grups. One grup (tw r three peple in each part f the digestive system) will dance the digestive system and grup tw will say the chant. Arrange dancers in a vertical line t the left f the digestive system and place the apprpriate label next t each sub grup f dancers. The chanters shuld be placed apart and far enugh away s as nt t disrupt the mvement. Say (this is a key part f the lessn) Ø (T the students dancing as the small intestine): When I prmpt yu, I want yu t mve t this pen space (pint t the pen space in the circulatry system dance frmatin). Yu will d yur part f the digestin dance here. (Give each student tw nutrient cards). One f yu will hand a nutrient card t a red bld cell as it passes by. Each time a red bld cell passes by, hand ut a nutrient card. This will simulate the nutrients passing ut f the digestive system and int the bldstream. Ø (T the rest f the students dancing in the digestin dance): Yu will all d yur part f the dance in yur places where yu are right nw. When it s yur turn, stand and d yur sectin f the dance, then sit back dwn. GUIDED PRACTICE (Applicatin f knwledge, prblem slving, crrective feedback) (15 minutes) Begin with circulating f the bld in the circulatin dance study. Say: Yur circulatry system never stps, yur heart cntinues t pump bld and circulate it all thrugh yur bdy even while yu sleep. Yur digestive system cntinues t wrk all the time as well. Yu may nt be eating, but yu cntinue t swallw thrughut the entire day, and even while yu sleep. Yur stmach may nt always be churning and secreting acids, but yur small intestine never stps supplying nutrients that the bld absrbs and transprts all thrugh yur bdy. Yur bdy uses energy frm the fd yu ate at dinner even while yu sleep. Yur large intestine cntinues t absrb water and cmpact waste even while yu sleep. Stp all actin. Begin the digestive dance. Remind students that in reality, the digestive system and its structures are really embedded within February 4, 2013 3

the circulatry system. But in rder t save space, we have separated them ut s that we can see each ne wrking Say: Yu wake up and start t eat yur breakfast. Yummmmm! Cereal and tast. Yur muth and teeth chew up each bite. Ø Grup 1, dancing part 1 f the digestin dance (muth and teeth) stands and perfrms. The rest f the class says the chant. The chanters will cntinue thrughut the exercise. Dancers will sit when finished. Say: Each bite is swallwed and travels dwn the esphagus. Ø Grup 2, dance part 2 (esphagus) stands and perfrms. Sit when finished. Say: The fd travels t the stmach where it is churned and mixed with acids. Ø Grup 3, dance part 3 (stmach) stands and perfrms. Sit when finished. Say: The fd enters the small intestine where the nutrients are released int the bldstream. This takes place in tiny bld vessels called capillaries. Ø Grup 4, the students dancing part 4 (the small intestine) slide ver int the space alltted fr them in the circulatin dance and d their part f the dance. The dancers will perfrm and hand a green nutrient card t ne f the students mving as a red bld cell. The student representing the bld cell will nw have ne xygen card and ne nutrient card. The bld cells cntinue in their pathway t the bdy. Say: The red bld cells take the nutrients and the xygen t the bdy. Ø At this pint, the students representing the red bld cells will hand bth the nutrient and xygen cards t the persn representing the bdy and receive a carbn dixide card. Optin: Yu may want t have a stack f yellw cards labeled waste. The student representing the bdy wuld hand nt nly a carbn dixide but als a waste card t the student representing the red bld cell. Yu as the teacher r ther identified student can place yurself smewhere n the pathway back t the heart t represent the kidney, where the waste card wuld be drpped ff. Say: The fd enters the large intestine where water is absrbed back int the bldstream. Ø Grup 5, dance part 5 (large intestine) stands and perfrms. Sit when finished. Say: Undigested fd is cmpacted and stred in the cln fr eliminatin. Ø Grup 6, dance part 6 (cln) stands and perfrms. Sit when finished. The entire time thrugh the breakfast cycle, the Circulatin Dance Study cntinues. Reinfrce t the students that neither systems ever really stps. Stp the actin and repeat the entire dance study all ver again, this time using lunch as the scenari. Remind students that this happens with everything that we eat. The entire system des nt stp even thugh we are nt eating. The Small and large intestine cntinue t perate all the time. Videtape the perfrmance. DEBRIEF & REFLECT (Identify prblems encuntered, ask and answer questins, discuss slutins and learning that tk place. Did students meet utcmes?) (2 minutes) Have the class jigsaw the Systems Can t Wrk Alne attachment at the end f this lessn. Have students answer the fllwing questins in their science ntebks. Hw d cells in the human bdy get the nutrients they need? Prvide the fllwing sentence frames: The digestive system reduces the fd we eat int. Nutrients pass ut f the int the bldstream fr transprt t the cells.] [The digestive system reduces the fd we eat int nutrients. Nutrients pass ut f the digestive system int the bldstream fr transprt t the cells.] Hw des the digestive system wrk? Prvide the fllwing sentence frames: Physical and chemical prcesses break cmplex fd int simple substances as it prgresses frm the muth and teeth, esphagus, stmach, and intestine and cln.] [Physical and chemical prcesses break cmplex fd int simple substances as it prgresses frm the muth and teeth, esphagus, stmach, small and large intestine and cln.] Hw did ding the dance studies in digestin and circulatin help yu understand hw these February 4, 2013 4

tw systems wrk tgether? EXTENSION (Expectatins created by the teacher that encurage students t participate in further research, make cnnectins, and apply understanding and skills previusly learned t persnal experiences.) Rehearse the tw dance studies and brainstrm ideas fr creating a 16-32 beat dance sequence fr the respiratry system, shwing waste passing thrugh the walls f the small intestine int the bld stream and t the kidney, t the bladder. February 4, 2013 5

Diagram #1 - Systems Can't Wrk Alne Systems rarely wrk alne. All f the systems in an rganism are intercnnected. A simple example is the cnnectin between the circulatry and respiratry systems. As bld circulates thrugh yur bdy, it eventually needs fresh xygen (O 2 ) frm the air. When the bld reaches the lungs, part f the respiratry system, the bld is re-xygenated. Yur stmach, part f the digestive system, cnstantly interacts with yur endcrine system and spreads hrmnes thrughut yur bdy. It's easy t pint ut a few in yur bdy. The tw yu think f the mst are prbably yur respiratry and digestive system. A cuple f times a day yu might get hungry, sit dwn, and have a nice meal. All f that fd gets brken dwn in yur digestive system s that yur bdy has energy t survive. The stuff yur bdy desn't need is eliminated at the ther end f the digestive tract. Since yu're breathing all f the time, the respiratry system is always at wrk. Yu breathe in and ut frm yur nse and muth while yur lungs are the main rgans that allw yur bdy t absrb the xygen yu need frm the air. There are many ther systems in yur bdy and specialized systems in ther animals arund the wrld. Respiratry Functin Yur respiratry system takes in xygen frm the atmsphere and mves that xygen int the bldstream by allwing it t mve acrss the membranes f the lungs int the bld vessels. The circulatry system then carries xygen t all the cells in the bdy and picks up carbn dixide waste, which it returns t the lungs. Carbn dixide diffuses frm the bld int the lungs, and yu exhale it int the atmsphere. Digestive Dependence Upn Respiratin The digestive tract is dependent upn the respiratry system, because yur digestive tract functins by using muscular cntractins t break up fd and mve it alng the tract. Smth muscle in the stmach churns fd int a liquid, and cntractins f the intestine mve fd thrugh the system. These muscles depend upn xygen in rder t functin -- withut xygen, yur digestive tract wuld stp wrking. Respiratry Dependence Upn Digestin Similarly, yur respiratry tract wuldn't be able t functin withut the prducts f digestin. While the prcess f exhalatin is passive and desn't require muscular cntractin, yu cntract the respiratry muscles -- including the diaphragm and intercstal muscles -- t inhale. Muscles need fuel in rder t cntract, and the fuel they use is primarily in the frm f carbhydrate and fat. The effrts f the digestive tract prvide the cells f the respiratry muscles with fuel. Cellular Dependence Upn Bth Systems The bdy cells depend upn prducts f bth the respiratry and digestive systems' functins in rder t February 4, 2013 6

maintain themselves. T prduce energy, cells burn nutrient mlecule fuel in xygen. The digestive tract prvides the nutrient mlecules, thrugh the prcess f digestin, while the respiratry tract prvides xygen. As such, the tw systems wrk tgether t give yur cells the ingredients they need t prduce energy, which they use t cmmunicate, build cellular prducts and grw. February 4, 2013 7
