Made to Move

Made to Move Statistics show national wellbeing is sharply declining. The culprits are many, but the workplace and chairs in particular have gotten an especially bad rap. For good reason. While our bodies are made to move, our increasing reliance on computers and other technology has increased the amount of time spent sitting at our desks. In 1960, jobs that required moderate physical activity accounted for 50 percent of the labor market; today, only 20 percent of jobs do. 1 In other words, physical activity is being engineered right out of our workplaces (and, in many cases, out of our lives). We ve become stuck in routines from eating lunch at our desks to taking the elevator rather than the stairs that prove harmful over time. The good news is that izzy+ has been doing plenty of research on the topic, leading to healthy seating designs and fun concepts like Varietine (yep, that s Variety + Routine!) that can have a significant impact on office workers wellbeing. As a nation, we re becoming less healthy, in spite of the many dieting and exercise regimes we attempt to follow. Simply the types of food we eat today and how we go about getting that food has dramatically shifted the balance of calories in versus calories out. 2 1 Less Active at Work, Americans Have Packed on Pounds. (2011, May 25). Retrieved December 1, 2014, from http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/25/less-active-at-work-americans-have-packed-on-pounds

We spend more time than ever in our cars (thanks in part to the development of suburbs and urban sprawl) and on our couches (usually with technology in hand). In general, our too-busy-routines don t leave time for the exercise and active fun that could start to make up for all the sitting we do the rest of the day. It s time for workplace design to step up and take charge (because clearly the occasional power smoothie and trip to the gym isn t cutting it)! For the past several years, izzy+ has been gathering research and collaborating with health professionals in the pursuit of improving health and wellbeing at work. In particular, we ve focused on designing better seating for healthier sitting chairs that encourage movement and variation, helping us break out of harmful routines and embrace more Varietine. Ultimately, we ve gathered nine of our best seating products, all designed to support healthier workplaces in exciting, even game-changing ways. 3

Wabi & Nikko A revolutionary seat design is at the heart (or shall we say bottom ) of Wabi s and Nikko s approach to movement and comfort. By engineering a seat pan that supports proper pelvic alignment, izzy has created a healthier way to sit one that lines up your kinetic chain, reduces pressure on your sit bones, and allows freedom of movement. 0 vertical Balanced sitting is achieved with the natural forward tilt of the pelvis. Wabi was designed with more user-specific adjustment options, for longer-term sits in 1st Spaces; Nikko, which is more simple and straight-forward, was designed specifically for 2nd and 3rd Spaces, where flexibility and collaboration rule. Comfort foam 0 horizontal Low-density inset foam Higher-density sculpted foam Inner seat pan with cut-out pockets and flexors support pelvic alignment Outer seat pan with front-edge flexors to relieve thigh pressure A cut-out pocket with flexors give way slightly, allowing the pelvis to assume a natural forward tilt (which is accommodated by the front edge flexors). When the pelvis is aligned, the resulting balanced posture (demonstrated by the dotted red lines at left) is the basis for healthy movement while sitting. Wabi, right at home Nikko loves collaboration Perch-perfect with a Nikko stool 4

Wabi Wabi s Active Movement Mechanism helps to balance the seat pan and promote user customization. High Performance Mesh is perfectly tensioned to support a more healthy, upright sit. Arms available as Height Adjustable Pivoting, fixed or armless. Optional pelvic rotator pad gently nudges your pelvis into alignment. Micro Back-Tension Adjustors let you fine-tune how active you like your sit. 4-position Personal Tension Lever (found on the right side) is used to pick a back recline tension that best supports personal preference. Nikko Nikko s V-Fork Swivel Mechanism provides a streamlined look and one simple adjustment for height. Featuring the same seat pan design as Wabi, Nikko offers a more straight-forward option (that s also available in stool-height!). 5

HÅG Capisco HÅG Capisco & Capisco Puls In case you d like to sound like a Norwegian, Capisco is pronounced Cah-PEACE-coe ( peace is what you ll be feeling when you re sitting on one). HÅG is pronounced H-aw-G! Sitting in more casual positions encourages less formal meeting experiences, which can increase energy levels and creativity. The 360 advantage. The lack of traditional chair arms makes it easy to shift and turn in your seat, trying it every-which-way throughout the day. Saddle up! The seat s saddle shape allows your thighs to drop down, rotating your pelvis slightly forward and allowing the proper curvature in your lower back. Simple Back Height Adjustment allows for a tailored fit. High, low & in between. Three cylinder height options mean even more variety. From a lower height (perfect for healthcare settings) to a stool-height (ideal for bar-level surfaces) to everything in between, you can sit, stand, or perch in this chair. Chair Base with rounded edges and grooved footrests supports asymmetrical sitting and encourages a variety of foot positions, increasing ankle movement and blood flow. HÅG Capisco with adjustable head rest 6 Integrated armrests support precision tasks perfect for healthcare applications Non-traditional arms help maximize movement and reach

Inspired by the classic design of a horse s saddle, HÅG Capisco and Capisco Puls encourage a variety of natural sitting positions. HÅG s signature BalancedMovementMechanism TM, allows you to sit balanced above the chair s tilting point, where you can easily tilt forward or backward with just a bit of assistance from your feet. Sit forward, backward, or sideways, engaging the uniquely shaped back as torso support or elbow rests. The Capisco chairs are also ideal paired with adjustable-height worksurfaces, for even more variation and movement in your workday. Giddyup! With a minimal amount of foam, yet a comfortable seat, has a best-in-class environmental design perfect for a broad range of applications. In order to meet the challenges of tomorrow, we have reduced the use of unnecessary material, minimizing its carbon footprint. The partially or fully upholstered seat cushion offers comfort and durability. BalancedMovementMechanism Open up! Sitting at a higher level with one foot on the foot ring or optional HÅG StepUp accessory (available for HÅG Capisco and Capisco Puls) opens up the rib cage for deeper breathing, better circulation, and ideal spinal alignment. Backless versions, for even more freedom of movement, are available in both HÅG Capisco and Capisco Puls. Like the base, the optional stool ring is designed with integrated grooves that provide traction when moving from side to side, and provide additional variety of movement for your legs and feet. 7

An Optional headrest provides support for your head, neck, and shoulders without restricting freedom of movement, thanks to a design that leaves a gap between the chair back and headrest. HÅG H05 & H04 Communication HÅG H05 is a hard-working task chair that provides movement and multiple options for the optimal workday. A simplified version of the HÅG H05, HÅG H04 Communication is a true collaborator perfect for conferencing and learning applications. Both chairs are designed to keep your brain and body fully engaged. HÅG s signature BalancedMovementMechanism lets you sit balanced above the chair s tilting point, allowing you to use your feet to guide the chair s movement and tilt angle. Make four different adjustments with a single knob: seat depth, back height, forward/backwards tilt resistance, and seat height. Armed and ready, the SwingBack Arm option lets you rotate the armrests completely out of the way, so you can sit sideways or just get closer to your desk. Chair Base with rounded edges and grooved footrests supports asymmetrical sitting and encourages a variety of foot positions, increasing ankle movement and blood flow. HÅG H05 Treat your feet with a HÅG StepUp accessory you can even get a foot massager ball! HÅG H04 Communication Fixed arms or armless An optional headrest offers support when you want it and stays out of the way when you don t. 8

HÅG H09 Sit in style without sitting still. HÅG H09 is HÅG s premium executive chair, combining refined, eye-catching aesthetics with HÅG s game-changing approach to ergonomics. Disappearing act: Unique flip-down arm design gives you the best of both worlds: armrests when you want them, none when you don t (and even the one-up-one-down variation). A space just for you. The HÅG H09 s seat back was designed to create a sense of private space a screened atmosphere that can stimulate concentration and creativity. BalancedMovementMechanism Lumbar love: An adjustable lumbar cushion offers optimal comfort and support (especially nice during long meetings). Fit for feet: Too many chairs ignore your feet! The HÅG H09 s base has embedded footpads to keep your ankles moving and your blood flowing. Looking good: Whether the HÅG H09 is gracing an executive office, an open-plan workspace, or a conference room, it is sure to take both aesthetics and comfort to new heights. 9

HÅG Wing The features stack up: HÅG Wing is constructed from lightweight materials that make it easy to move and stack, yet it s sturdy enough to withstand heavy use in learning spaces, cafes, libraries, and meeting rooms. Form and function. Wing s unique V-shaped back reduces pressure on the spine. Rock and recline. HÅG Wing s integrated rocking mechanism follows your body, inspiring variation. Even out. Self-leveling legs help conquer slanted, uneven floors. Stacks 15 high on trolley or as high as you can reach on the floor Five-star task with BalancedMovementMechanism TM Super lightweight for set up or breakdown 10

Webster Work, meet, or learn in human-centered comfort, flexibility, and cool looks. Webster is super sturdy (warranted up to 350 pounds!), yet is easy to move, fold, nest, and stack even when it has a tablet arm. Leaning back in Webster gives you up to 12 degrees of natural back recline. Intelligent intuition.
