Your key responsibilities Fulfil the accountabilities and responsibilities of this role in accordance with the respective Hospital and Health Service purpose and objectives, as outlined below. Provide outpatient and inpatient care of patients with a variety of sleep disorders including clinical assessment of patients and determining appropriate investigation and appropriate management. Review and interpret sleep study data and use this information to plan the clinical management of patients with sleep disorders. Develop a high level of understanding of the Quality Assurance of a Sleep Laboratory, by direct involvement in Quality Assurance Programmes. Provide acute management of acute respiratory failure, including the provision of Non-invasive Ventilation. Role Description Date: August 2013

Plan and implement clinical education strategies and programs for Junior Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and Health Practitioners in the field of Sleep Medicine by providing educational in-services and contributing to the Educational Programme and Meetings. Engage in Clinical Research by developing and conducting ethical research projects and presenting this work at National Scientific Meetings. Ensure patients and other staff are treated fairly and with mutual respect and understanding, regardless of cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Lead and manage staff by fostering and committing to patient safety and quality in the delivery of health care by maintaining and evaluating safety and quality practices and initiatives. Qualifications/Professional registration/other requirements Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association within Australia. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties. MB BS or equivalent qualification registrable with the Medical Board of Queensland. Successful completion of Part 1 Examinations of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) is mandatory. The successful candidate must also have completed core advanced training approved by the RACP in Respiratory Medicine or Neurology. Other Internal Medicine streams can also undertake Advanced Training in Sleep Medicine after completion of core training in that field but require confirmation from the relevant Specialty Training Committee or Specialty Advisory Committee. Unit Profile The Sleep Disorders Centre is a clinical unit of the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and is the tertiary referral centre for the southern area of Queensland, servicing a population of approximately 1.7 million. The Sleep Disorders Centre is a NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) accredited 6-bed state of the art facility with co-located outpatient department. The Sleep Disorders Centre is the largest public sleep facility in Queensland. The service manages all forms of adult sleep disorders, both respiratory and non-respiratory. The service performs a full range of investigations including comprehensive (Type 1) diagnostic studies, CPAP titration studies, bi-level ventilation studies, Multiple Sleep Latency Tests, Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests and oesophageal pressure monitoring. The service also performs simplified sleep studies (Type 3 and Type 4) and actigraphy. There is ample outpatient clinical experience in the management of sleep disorders. There is also a strong focus on clinical research and the successful applicant would be expected to participate in the unit s ongoing research activity and be encouraged to develop their own research projects. The Sleep Medicine Registrar would also assist in the well-equipped Respiratory High Dependency Unit, with exposure to non-invasive ventilation for acute respiratory failure, and the management of chronic ventilation in the Spinal Injuries Unit. The hospital is equipped with a respiratory laboratory which performs complex physiological tests and involvement in the reporting of these tests is part of this role. The Sleep Medicine Registrar also has the opportunity to perform respiratory procedures in a dedicated Day Procedural Unit which include bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, Endobronchial Ultrasound and pleural procedures. There is high level of supervision with 6 sleep physicians on staff. The position would be ideal for a senior registrar in Respiratory Medicine or Neurology wishing to attain Sleep Physician accreditation. The Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital is the largest tertiary referral hospital in Queensland. The hospital fulfils a significant teaching and research role with links to Queensland s major tertiary institutions. Located at Herston, the Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital shares the Herston Campus with the Royal Children s Hospital, the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical research and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. The Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital is committed to best practice and continuous quality improvement. The Sleep Disorders Unit at RBWH is a part of the Department of Thoracic Medicine and is a tertiary referral centre for central and southern Queensland. The unit is a 2-bed state of the art facility with co-located outpatient department, with the potential to expand to 4 beds. The service manages all forms of adult sleep disorders, both respiratory and non-respiratory, and is supported by a CPAP educational and support programme staffed by sleep scientists and nurses. GenesisSleepCare is a NATA/ASA accredited private facility with 39 sleep beds over multiple centres throughout Queensland and Darwin, and performs comparable services. These services include comprehensive in-laboratory diagnostic polysomnography, portable unattended polysomnography, CPAP titration studies, bi-level ventilation studies, multiple sleep latency tests and maintenance of wakefulness tests. The headquarters of GenesisSleepCare are at RiverCity Private Hospital in Milton. There is ample outpatient clinical experience in the management of sleep disorders and the average numbers of sleep studies performed is in excess of 500 per month. There is also a focus on clinical research and the successful applicant would be expected to participate in the existing ongoing research activities and be encouraged to develop his or her own research project(s). Both facilities are associated with pulmonary function laboratories which perform complex physiological tests. There is high level of supervision with 12 sleep physicians in total. The sleep fellow will spend 60% of the working week at RBWH and 40% at GenesisSleepCare. The position would be ideal for a senior registrar wishing to attain Sleep Physician accreditation. The Prince Charles Hospital (Metro North Health) The Prince Charles Hospital is part of the Metro-North Health Service District. The district provides the full range of health services including rural, regional and tertiary teaching hospitals. The District covers an area of 4157 square kilometres and extends from the Brisbane River to north of Kilcoy. The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) is the major tertiary level cardiothoracic referral hospital for Queensland, the largest such unit in Australia, and one of the largest services of its type in the world The Sleep Disorders Centre is a clinical unit of unit of the Thoracic Program. The Centre is a tertiary referral centre for the Metro North Health Service District. The Thoracic Program at the Prince Charles Hospital also hosts the state-wide services of Lung Transplantation and Cystic Fibrosis. Additional information on the District is available on QHEPS site via www.health.qld.gov.au The Sleep Disorders Centre is an ASA accredited 6-bed state-of- the-art facility. All forms of adult sleep disorders, both respiratory and non-respiratory are managed by the service. The service has a strong focus in the management of chronic respiratory failure. The service performs a full range of investigations including comprehensive (Type 1) diagnostic studies, CPAP titration studies, bilevel ventilation studies, Multiple Sleep Latency Tests and, Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests. The service also undertakes and Actigraphy and simplified sleep studies (Type III & IV studies). An insomnia service with support from a psychologist and psychiatrist forms part of the Sleep Disorders Centre has been established this year. There is a wide range of outpatient clinical experience in the management of sleep disorders utilising a multidisciplinary approach. A multidisciplinary motor neurone disease service with input from neurology, palliative care and sleep medicine specialists has been running for a number of years. There is a new 6 bed close observation unit in the adjoining respiratory ward which was opened in 2013. This caters for high acuity respiratory patients including those requiring acute non invasive ventilation. Clinical research is strongly encouraged and the successful applicant would be expected to participate in the unit s ongoing research activity. The hospital is equipped with a respiratory laboratory which performs complex physiological tests. There is high level of supervision with six sleep physicians on staff. The position would be ideal for a senior registrar in Respiratory Medicine or Neurology wishing to attain Sleep Physician accreditation.
