Dementia: a challenge for EU-Member States All Member States are concerned: 6.37 million people were living with dementia in the EU in 2011 Prevalence rate: 7.23% in 65 years or higher age population (JA ALCOVE-report, 2013) Economic cost of 105 billion in 2011 (J. Second EU- Joint Action on dementia (2015-2018) - Overall coordination by United Kingdom (Scotland); Work packages to focus on (under development!): Postdiagnostic support (lead: France), crisis and care co-ordination (Italy and Netherlands), quality of residential care (Norway), dementia-friendly communities (UK).

First WHO Ministerial Conference on Global Action Against Dementia (GAAD) Geneva, 16-17 March 2015 Organised by the WHO in close collaboration with the UK, involving 80 countries Objective: raise awareness about the global burden and impact of dementia to encourage Governments worldwide to take action to prevent dementia and improve care services to identify cares or disease-modifying therapies for dementia The conference endorsed a Call for Action to invite a sustained global effort to promote GAAD, with the WHO in a leadership role. Discussions about the architecture of further continuity activities are ongoing.

Dementia will be a priority of the Luxembourg and Dutch EU-Presidencies Luxembourg will put the focus on prevention and care, and intends to raise dementia in the Informal Health Council under its Presidency. The Netherlands will organise a European conference on dementia on 8-9 May 2016

Conclusion Building on the activities and achievements since 2009, the Commission has launched action to: Maintain its coordinating role in the development of EU-policy on dementia and in supporting Member States Launch the second Joint Action; Provide further opportunities to support research under the "Horizon 2020"-EU Research Framework Programme; Stimulate the development and use of e-health solutions in the field of dementia; Continue playing a global role and collaborating with international stakeholders, in particularly in the context of the initiative "Global Action Against Dementia.
