There is no general meeting for August, but please come see us at the Kitsap County Fair! We are in the Presidents Hall in a large booth near the back. August 22nd-26th Kitsap County Fairgrounds 1200 Fairgrounds Rd. NW Bremerton, WA 98311 Elected Officers for 2018 President: Shane Schackmann (360) 628-2350 shane.schackmann@navy.mil Vice President: Bill Little wmblittle@msn.com (360) 536-1818 Secretary: Talena Webb-Klumper (360) 440-2046 talenawb@gmail.com Treasurer: Wendy Carlson (360) 824-1071 Club website: www.kmgs.org Club Facebook page: www.facebook.com/kitsap Mineralandgemsociety/ Club Email: kitsapmineralandgem@outlook.com August2018 Greetings fellow rock hounds! This month the club will have a booth at the fair grounds, volunteers are still needed for security watch and material for show cases, any help is appreciated! The last field trip to red top mountain was productive and fun for those who came out. Next field trip is still TBD but there has been some interest in Little Naches so that is one possibility. As I mentioned in the last months news letter I am asking for support to amend part of the bylaws, specifically article 5 section 5 and potentially article 5 section 4. This is in regards to the number of members at large constituting a quorum. I am asking to reduce the number of members at large. The bylaws can be found on our website at kmgs.org. If you need help finding them, ask a club officer so you can review them if you would like. On a different topic please consider donating tumbled materials for the fair and for the November show silent auction. Board meetings have continued throughout the summer this year, we are meeting up stairs @ Chico alliance church at 5pm in the main lobby area. Any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as president! Very respectfully, Shane Schackmann Jefferson County Fair is next weekend! Support our friends in the Port Townsend club and pay them a visit. August 10th, 11th and 12th Contact Virginia Crandall, Fair Chairman, vcran43@gmail.com 360-379- 8319 if you have any questions about helping out or the schedule.

PAGE 2 Kitsap County Fair August 22nd - 26th https://www.kitsapgov.com/parks/pages/fairmain.aspx Schedule and Admission prices all at the link above. Each year the Kitsap Mineral and Gem Society has a booth at the fair in the presidents hall. Come by and see us! Contact Doug Leider (360-627-8142) to help out. Many hands make for light work. Fall Festival of Gems This is our biggest event of the year! Gordy Eslava, our show chairman, still needs to hear from you! Consider filling up a display case with your awesome finds, or perhaps signing up for a security watch shift. November will be right around the corner, and we can t forget to sign up and show our support for the club, as well as take advantage of the great opportunity to show off those beautiful collections you have. If you have tumblers, and you can donate tumbled material for the kids grab-bags, please contact Gordy and let him know. This helps the club out - and if enough material is donated, then we don t have to purchase any! Keep those tumblers rolling, and think about ways you can give a little back to the club. Don t be shy to participate and help in club events, all are welcome. The show is November 17th and 18th this year. Kitsap County Fairgrounds, Presidents Hall The Trading Post ISO a small rock saw- 12, 14, 16 inch, not too pricey please. Minor issues with it are okay. PAGE 4 Annual Club Pic-Nic - July The annual club pic-nic up at Raab Park in Poulsbo was a success! It was great fun spending some time with the club. There was a table full of club pictures and memories, and also activities for everyone to try out and practice such as making ming trees. There were also games to play and delicious food! The 50/50 raffle was a hoot, as always. The dessert table was full of goodies and there were so many yummy salads along with the burgers and dogs provided by the club. Thank you to all who were able to attend and contribute. It was great to see your smiling faces!

Juniors Section PAGE 5 Hello Junior Rockhounds - We will not have a regular meeting in August BUT we do have some important club events coming up. Do not forget about the Kitsap County Fair coming up in August. The club has a booth in the President's Hall and we need helpers. Please contact Doug Leider if you wish to sign up. Sincerely, Kathy Reimers, Jill Wetzel and Bobbie Sack, Juniors Leaders http://mocomi.com/ presents : What Is A Volcano? Check out MocomiKids channel on YouTube for more videos and info. The term Volcano is derived from the name of Vulcan, the god of fire, in Roman mythology. To understand the activity of volcanoes, you need to first understand the structure of the Earth. A volcano is a mountain from where the molten rocks or magma erupt through the surface. In simple terms, a volcano is an opening in the earth s surface from which the molten rocks and gases escape out. Once the magma erupts through the Earth s surface, it is called lava. The temperature of the lava may range from 700 to 1200 degrees Centigrade. Color the volcano below:
