VALVE CLINIC

THE VALVE CLINIC Houston Methodist DeBakey Valve Clinic combines outstanding clinical care, advanced imaging and surgical excellence to offer coordinated evaluation and treatment options for patients with complex heart valve diseases. Led by Dr. Stephen H. Little, the clinic combines the expertise of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, imaging specialists and cardiovascular anesthesia specialists to collectively develop and deliver the best medical and surgical solutions for each patient. Our cardiovascular professionals readily share their expertise and resources, leading to comprehensive care and treatment for some of the world s most complex cardiac disorders. For a complete list of our participating physicians, visit houstonmethodist.org/valve-clinic. VALVE CONFERENCE In order to treat the most complex clinical cases, involving both patients seen at the Valve Clinic and valve disease patients from referring physicians outside Houston Methodist, a multidisciplinary team of cardiovascular surgeons, interventional cardiologists and imaging experts discuss strategies, available treatment options and possible surgical intervention at a biweekly valve conference. After the conference, a letter outlining the team s consensus opinion for treatment is sent to the referring physician and physicians at the Valve Clinic for review.

THE HOUSTON METHODIST VALVE CLINIC IS A LEADER IN DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF PERCUTANEOUS VALVE TREATMENT APPROACHES. This collaborative clinic offers patients with complex valvular disorders exemplary, multidisciplinary care in a one-stop arrangement of cardiovascular specialists. When a patient is referred to the Valve Clinic, a nurse coordinates requests for any prior diagnostic studies. Most patients spend only one afternoon on their initial visit consulting with Valve Clinic doctors. The referring physician receives a thorough report outlining the team s findings and treatment recommendations. SPECIALIZED SERVICES Nationally accredited imaging labs Cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, and 3D echocardiography Valve imaging interpretation by board certified physicians with national and international expertise Treatment recommendations including medical therapy and anticoagulation Second opinions regarding valve diagnosis, severity, and the timing and type of recommended intervention Biweekly valve conference Ongoing follow-up care, if requested by referring physician Patient education and support Congenital heart disease ADVANCED SURGICAL SERVICES Sternal sparing surgery Redo sternotomy Multivalve surgery CATHETER-BASED INTERVENTIONS Aortic and mitral valve balloon valvuloplasty Paravalvular leak repair Transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) Transcatheter valve-in-valve replacement for degenerated bioprosthetic valves Catheter-based mitral valve repair (MitraClip) Transcatheter ASD/PFO closure

TRANSCATHETER AORTIC VALVE REPLACEMENT (TAVR) PROCEDURE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE VALVE CLINIC Our valve team has extensive TAVR experience. We have all commercial transcatheter heart valve systems available. We are currently enrolling in clinical trials of the next generation TAVR therapies. We perform commerical MitraClip procedures and are enrolling patients in clinical trials for mitral valve intervention. TRANSCATHETER AORTIC VALVE REPLACEMENT (TAVR) FOR SEVERE SYMPTOMATIC AORTIC STENOSIS

VALVE CLINIC TEAM WORKFLOW As shown, a referring physician sends the patient to the Valve Clinic, which takes him/her through the continuum of care to treat the valve problems. Valve Clinic physicians then return the patient to the care of his or her primary practitioner or cardiologist.

PATIENT CARE A variety of patient care options are available to referring physicians, including: Cardiology consult Consult and follow-up (Shared Care) with referring physician Consult and manage care Cardiovascular surgery consult only (no cardiology consult required) Once treatment is complete, unless specifically requested by the referring physician, the patient is always referred back to his or her original physician. It is our goal at the Valve Clinic to help you treat your valve patients and return them to you for ongoing care.
