The purpse f the fellwship is t prvide practical, hands- n experience supprting Namati s legal empwerment prgramming in Sierra Lene. This fellwship is a unique pprtunity t jin a grwing team in an exciting start- up rganizatin. The fellw will prvide supprt t Namati Sierra Lene s Land and Envirnmental Justice initiatives. Land and Envirnmental Justice in Practice Namati Sierra Lene wrks in partnership with cmmunities t strengthen the cmmunities ability t prtect, enfrce and defend their custmary land rights and t supprt equitable and empwered cmmunity- investr partnerships. In turn, cmmunities becme prperly prepared and gain access t legal representatin, advice r assistance during all negtiatins with investrs and state actrs cncerning the use f cmmunity lands and natural resurces. Namati Sierra Lene als supprts cmmunities in their effrts t renegtiate past large- scale land acquisitin deals, which cmmunities think are nerus, ne- sided r were nt fully understd. Fellwship Activities and Respnsibilities The Law Fellw will assist Namati Sierra Lene by participating in sme f the fllwing activities: Representing land wners/ cmmunities t develp an equitable agreement with an investr. Renegtiating mre equitable terms fr existing lease agreements n agricultural land, including - prtectin fr farming, residential, cmmn lands and revised rent. Advcating fr a plicy regime n land, envirnment, and investment that is mre equitable and sustainable. Helping t develp and implement rules between chiefdm cuncils and cmmunities n interfacing with investrs. Clarifying the enfrcement mechanism fr crprate scial respnsibility prvisins f crpratins in Sierra Lene. Publishing a reprt detailing the current state f land, envirnment, and investment practices. Educating cmmunities n tracking and dcumenting vilatins f envirnmental regulatins by industry players. Initiating additinal strategic litigatin t address vilatins f Sierra Lenean law as they are brught t Namati.

Qualificatins Demnstrated interest and passin fr scial justice, rule f law, human rights, and/r develpment. Experience in develping natin(s) a plus; prir experience in Africa is highly recmmended. We will be recruiting fr tw fellws fr this wrk. Envirnmental Justice in Practice Namati s Envirnmental Justice prgram wrks t clarify the prcesses f envirnmental regulatin in India, and experiments with institutinal and cmmunity- based interventins t imprve envirnmental utcmes. The prgram wrks at three levels: it strives t demystify existing envirnmental regulatry framewrk, wrks with cmmunities t grund- truth vilatins f law, and cnducts research n envirnmental regulatry framewrk with respect t the new challenges and discurses f envirnmental gvernance. Namati partners with the Centre fr Plicy Research, a Delhi- based think- tank, fr this prgram. Namati s teams in Uttara Kannada and Kutch engage lcal gvernments t imprve envirnmental utcmes by advcating fr better land use planning. It is critical fr the team t have an understanding f the laws and regulatins that influence the gvernance f castal land use, and hw these plicies are actually implemented n the grund. The legal fellw will supprt the prgram by cnducting research n laws that gvern castal land use, hw these are practically implemented n the grund, and the effects f their implementatin n envirnmental resurces and lcal resurce- based livelihds. The fellw will cnduct structured interviews and fcus grups with varius actrs invlved in land use planning and implementatin f these laws, and cnduct analysis f legal clauses and judicial rders (state and central levels) n the questin f land use planning. The fellw will be based in Uttara Kannada and Kutch, and wrk clsely with Namati s field teams at each lcatin. Fellwship Activities and Respnsibilities The Law Fellw will assist Namati by participating in sme f the fllwing activities: Researching laws that gvern castal land use, the status f their implementatin and their effects r impacts.

Publishing mems and reprts detailing the current state f land, envirnment, and investment practices in India that affect castal areas. Advancing discussins amng gvernments, majr develpment institutins, dnrs, and civil sciety abut ptins fr sustainable financing fr legal empwerment, amng ther glbal plicy issues

Research and Publicatins Publishing a series f in- depth case studies n legal empwerment that capture the perspectives f practitiners, based n interviews with netwrk members and investigative research. Designing e- learning mdules and ther web- based educatinal tutrials aimed at strengthening the wrk f ur netwrk members. Tpics may include but are nt limited t: strategies fr dealing with gender- based vilence, legal empwerment tls fr prmting public health, and access t infrmatin. Investigating the status and implementatin f natinal legal aid framewrks, mdels fr scaling up cmmunity paralegal services, laws relating t land wnership, natural resurce management, statelessness/citizenship rights, and mre; Drawing lessns frm these natinal experiences and cmmunicating them t members f the glbal netwrk Prgram Develpment Develping pprtunities fr prgram develpment and new initiatives t further Namati s missin and/r grw the evidence base fr legal empwerment, particularly in Sutheast Asia, Latin America, and the United States.
