About the th A u PiCnic Under the Stars This year, gala chair Jennifer Lutjen is expected to welcome more than 500 guests to the elegant Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch. The Enchanted Forest themed picnic will include dinner, silent and live auctions, entertainment, and dancing. We are proud to recognize Bill and Laurie Eckholm as the evening s special honorees. Last year, more than 520 community members attended our successful event and raised more than $500,000 to help the American Cancer Society save lives. Proceeds benefited the Society s patient support services in Arizona, such as the Road To Recovery program, the Reach To Recovery program, and the Hope Lodge program. The event was celebrated in local publications, such as Trends Magazine, AZ Redbook, Frontdoor Magazine, Phoenix Magazine, and the Phoenix Business Journal. Proceeds from the event will help the American Cancer Society step closer to achieving a world free from the pain and suffering of cancer. Through groundbreaking cancer research, free patient programs and services, and community outreach, the Society helps people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back against a disease that has taken too much from too many. With every dollar we raise through the Picnic Under the Stars gala, we are helping the American Cancer Society be there for those affected by every cancer in every community, including those who are currently dealing with a cancer diagnosis, those who may face a diagnosis in the future, and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether because of education and risk reduction. About the Picnic Under the Stars For more information about the American Cancer Society 57th annual Picnic Under the Stars, please contact Sarah Philippe at sarah.philippe@cancer.org or 602-952-7509.
honorees Bill & Laurie Eckholm We are grateful to announce our 2018 Picnic Under the Stars honorees Laurie and Bill Eckholm, who are fabulous leaders in the Phoenix community! Bill's business career was a successful one, allowing him to become president of some of the world s largest fire suppression companies. After a brief retirement, Bill and Laurie teamed up in 2000 to found Firetrace USA based in Scottsdale. Firetrace is a fire suppression company manufacturing specialized suppression systems which flourished to become a global leader in the field, with manufacturing operations located in Scottsdale and the UK, and sales offices in the UK, Dubai, India, Singapore, Australia, South Africa, and Brazil. Af ter Bill suf fered a serious stroke in 2013, he realized it was time to slow down. Two years later, Firetrace was sold to a publicly traded British company. They graciously attribute the company's success to its amazing employees! As Firetrace became increasingly successful, Bill and Laurie realized that with success should come a decision to give back to noble causes so they became immersed in several charities in the Valley. They hadn't given cancer much thought although they understood it was a terrible disease, and had empathy for all that had to deal with it. It was something that happened to others, not them. But life changes quickly, and they found themselves dealing with cancer in a very personal way. Laurie's Dad lost his battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma af ter eight weeks in the hospital, and Laurie's mother was diagnosed with late stage ovarian cancer, enduring chemo and surgery at 83 which took its toll physically and mentally in her final days. Then in 2013, Bill was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He states the research funded by the American Cancer Society saved my life! It was the PSA test which became elevated from 2012 to 2013, that led to a biopsy and discovery of an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Bill s inspiring message is straightforward I am a cancer survivor and I shout from the rooftops! I survived the most aggressive prostate cancer. Never give up, never! If you do, cancer will win. If you keep fighting, you have a chance to win! We are honored to have Bill and Laurie join with the American Cancer Society to attack cancer on all fronts! Please help us by supporting 2018 Picnic Under the Stars and together, we will fund more discoveries to save more lives, and continue serving patients with vital programs and services.

About the American cancer society As the nation s largest private, not-for-profit funder of cancer research in the United States, the American Cancer Society has played a role in most major cancer research breakthroughs in recent history. Our own research and that of our funded researchers helped to confirm the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, established the link between obesity and multiple cancers, developed drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer, and showed that mammography is the most ef fective way to detect breast cancer. In addition, the Society provides information, day-to-day help, and emotional support 24 hours a day, seven days a week to those touched by cancer. This includes free programs and services that help with everyday needs like transportation and lodging. The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge North Phoenix community provides free overnight lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers who have to travel away from home for treatment. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for it allows guests to focus on the most important thing: getting well. The Hope Lodge community provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. Every Hope Lodge location also of fers a variety of resources and information about cancer and its treatment.
