Dear Prospective Student-Athlete: The University of Maryland Sports Medicine Department is delighted that you are considering becoming a member of the Terp Family. The purpose of this page is to provide you with important healthcare information relative to your participation as a student-athlete at the University of Maryland. The University of Maryland Sports Medicine Department is headquartered in the state-of-the-art Gossett Team House. Additional athletic training facilities are also located in the Comcast Center and in the Varsity Team House. All facilities feature state-of-the-art equipment and supplies to facilitate first-class athletic injury care and rehabilitation. The Gossett Team House facility opens for treatments and rehabilitation at 7:00am on a daily basis, while other facilities open at 8:30am. All facilities remain open until the last student-athlete has finished injury treatments and/or rehabilitation after practice. The University of Maryland Sports Medicine Department employs thirteen (13) NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) that are available and/or on-call 24 hours per day to care for the student-athletes. The University is also privileged to have the services of a physical therapist / athletic trainer that coordinates all of the department s rehabilitation services, and approximately twenty-five (25) student athletic trainers who also assist with providing round-the-clock, first-class healthcare to student-athletes. One (1) University of Maryland certified athletic trainer is assigned to each University of Maryland athletic team on a full-time basis, along with at least one (1) student athletic trainer. Other certified athletic trainers are available to assist as needed throughout the year. MEDICAL STAFF The University of Maryland Sports Medicine Department is privileged to have the services of University of Maryland Medical Systems as their team physicians. The medical care of all student-athletes is in the capable hands of: Dr. Craig Bennett, MD Head Team Physician / Orthopedic Surgeon University of Maryland Sports Medicine Dr. Yvette Rooks, MD Team Physician / Family Practice / Sports Medicine University of Maryland Family Medicine Associates Dr. Michael Yorio, MD Team Physician / Internist / Sports Medicine University of Maryland Sports Medicine Team Physicians are available on-site six (6) days per week. The University of Maryland Sports Medicine Department also utilizes the services of medical consultants in more than 30 medical specialties throughout the Washington, DC and Baltimore metropolitan areas. The University Of Maryland University Health Center provides a wide-range of on-campus healthcare, including x-rays, pharmacy services, laboratory services, massage therapy, acupuncture, nutrition counseling, and counseling services on a daily basis. INSURANCE COVERAGE OF STUDENT-ATHLETES-?? The University of Maryland Department of Intercollegiate Athletics recommends that all student-athletes be covered by some type of individual health insurance before participating in any athletics event.?? The student-athlete s insurance will be considered the primary insurance coverage.?? The University of Maryland Department of Intercollegiate Athletics also provides a medical and catastrophic insurance program for its student-athletes. This policy is considered SECONDARY to, or in excess of, personal family medical insurance. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION PROCESS-?? All student-athletes must undergo a comprehensive pre-participation physical examination on a yearly basis that is coordinated through the University of Maryland Sports Medicine Department and its Team Physicians.?? All student-athletes will undergo a baseline computerized neuropsychological test. CONTACT LENSES-?? Comprehensive eye examinations and contact lenses are provided for student-athletes throughout the year.?? Replacement contact lenses are provided for student-athletes who damage or lose their lenses during athletics participation.?? Vision Training is available to student-athletes who require it. CUSTOM MOUTH GUARDS-?? Custom-fitted mouth guards are provided for all student-athletes who require them (e.g. football, lacrosse, & field hockey) and/or those requesting them. SPECIAL BRACES / CUSTOM ORTHOTICS-?? Student-athletes needing special braces and/or custom orthotics may receive them after undergoing an examination by a University of Maryland Team Physician.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What happens if my son / daughter does not have primary medical insurance? If your son / daughter does not have primary medical insurance, he / she may apply for primary insurance coverage through the University of Maryland Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. What happens if my son s / daughter s primary medical insurance does not cover an athletic related injury / illness? If your son s / daughter s primary medical insurance does not cover an athletic related injury / illness, University of Maryland s secondary insurance will cover the expenses. Will my son / daughter have to miss class and/or practice to go to doctor s appointments? No, University of Maryland s Team Physicians are available on-site six (6) days per week. Diagnostic testing centers and medical consultants grant our student-athletes preferred scheduling times and are willing to work around the student-athlete s academic and practice obligations at all times. What on-site physician services are provided for University of Maryland student-athletes? University of Maryland Student-Athletes are privileged to have the services of Team Physicians on-site six (6) days per week. The University of Maryland University Health Center and medical consultants are also available on-call as needed. What special medical services will my son / daughter have access to? As a University of Maryland student-athlete, your son / daughter will have access to chiropractors, acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition counseling, sports psychology, and other medical consultants.
