Expanded Agenda MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 2018 7:00-9:00 am SAVE THE TOOTH VS. IMPLANT Speaker: Roger Hess, DDS Sometimes we are all faced with the dilemma to save a tooth with root canal therapy and other adjunctive services or extract and place an implant. Patients often have their own ideas about what should be done and while this is understandable it is good for the clinician to have evidence based data to better present to those patients facing this choice. n Determine the prognosis of a failing tooth to receive endodontic treatment; n Identify which teeth have a reasonable chance of long term survival (5 years at least); n Advise patients with evidence based conclusions on whether the tooth has a good enough prognosis to warrant endodontic therapy; n Determine whether treating the tooth and pushing the implant down the road would be beneficial on a questionable tooth. 4:30-6:30 pm THE ROLE OF THE DENTIST IN MANAGING SLEEP APNEA AND SLEEP DISORDERS Speaker: Glenn Maron, DDS Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, and not everyone who has sleep apnea snores. So how do you tell the difference between normal snoring and a more serious case of sleep apnea? As dentists, we should play an integral part in the sleep management team. We will review the basic concepts of sleep medicine. Explain the polysmnogram (sleep study) and its importance for diagnosis and treatment planning. We will also discuss the role of oral appliances and surgery for the management of sleep apnea. TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2018 7:00-9:00 am CONTROLLING PERIODONTAL INFLAMMATION: CAN WE REALLY SAVE TEETH AND REGENERATE LOST TISSUES? Speaker: Thomas Van Dyke, DDS, PhD n Describe the relationship between inflammation, bone loss and tissue regeneration in periodontitis; n Explain the mechanism of action of periodontal regeneration; why it works and doesn t work in different situations; n Discuss potential modifications of treatment regimens for the patient with periodontitis to control inflammation, prevent further damage and achieve true periodontal regeneration. 5:00 pm WELCOME RECEPTION WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2018 7:00-9:00 am ORTHODONTICS IN THE 21 ST CENTURY - PART 1 Speaker: Melissa Rathburn, DDS Now that we have intraoral and CBCT scanning capabilities, how do we integrate them meaningfully into our practice? Is our use of our 3D technologies limited to diagnosis and treatment planning? We have moved beyond these boundaries. Using a fully integrated 3D diagnostic and treatment planning platform, we can utilize these media for fixed appliance therapy, indirect bonding, surgical planning, aligner therapy and combination treatments all while enhancing the patient experience and treatment outcomes. n Describe how a 3-D digital platform can significantly improve treatment planning capabilities; especially in interdisciplinary cases; n Explain the scope of this platform in providing a higher level of diagnosis, treatment planning and orthodontic treatment; n Identify patients that would benefit from the technology for their orthodontic care. 4:30-6:30 pm ORTHODONTICS IN THE 21 ST CENTURY - PART 2 Speaker: Melissa Rathburn, DDS n Give examples of the basic concepts of sleep medicine; n Perform a proper head/neck and airway evaluation; n Interpret the Polysomnogram (Sleep Study); n Describe the relationship between oro-facial pain and sleep; n Discuss the roles of oral appliance therapy and surgery.

Expanded Agenda THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2018 7:00-9:00 am PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND SYSTEMIC DISEASE INTERACTIONS: IT S REAL; WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING ABOUT IT? Speaker: Thomas Van Dyke, DDS, PhD n Describe the biologic basis of the relationship between periodontitis and systemic disease; n Develop a working knowledge of inflammatory interactions leading to and linking the common diseases of aging; n Discuss the modifications of treatment for the patient with periodontitis and complicating systemic disease. FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 2018 7:00-9:00 pm PERI-IMPLANT DISEASE Speaker: Roger Hess, DDS Newsflash! Implants are not perfect. Trauma from occlusion and poor oral hygiene can contribute to a process called peri-implantitis. At best, it results in minor inflammation of the tissue around the implant crown. At worst, it results in bone loss around the implant body and possible mobility/loss of the implant fixture. n Distinguish between peri-implantitis and peri-mucositis; n Advise patients on best prevention methods of peri-implantitis; n Determine when to refer to a specialist for treatment of peri-implantitis to prevent loss of implant. 4:30-6:30 pm PAIN MANAGEMENT IN DENTISTRY Speaker: Glenn Maron, DDS The FDA, JADA as well as lay media are all very concerned and highlighting the excessive use of narcotics and other addictive medications in dentistry. Dr. Maron will lead a discussion on current recommendations in pain management for the dental patient. From premedication to local anesthesia, staying abreast of the latest protocols is critical for ideal pain control. We will discuss oral and IV sedation techniques, current and future requirements for state anesthesia certification and will discuss post-op pain control, including appropriate use of narcotics and anti-inflammatory medications. n Discuss appropriate narcotic use with patients; n Offer other options for pain management; n Assess and manage patients with anxiety and other psychosocial issues.
