The Mela-No-More organization invites you and your company to be a part of its annual KENTucky Derby Fundraiser to benefit the Melanoma Research Foundation. FACTS ON MELANOMA: Why Research is Critical Every hour of every day, someone dies of melanoma in the US Melanoma strikes people of all ages (including pediatrics), all races, all economic levels and both sexes Melanoma represents 4% of all skin cancers, but 79% of all skin cancer deaths. (American Cancer Society) It is one of the fastest growing cancers in the US and worldwide and the number of new melanomas diagnosed in the US is increasing Exposure to tanning beds before age 35 increases a person s risk of developing melanoma by 75%, and occasional use of tanning beds can triple their chance The National Cancer Institute estimates that about 60,000 Americans were diagnosed with melanoma in 2005 and about 7,800 people died from the disease The incidence of recurrence among patients previously diagnosed with melanoma is estimated to be 10% In all persons age 15 29, melanoma is the second most common cancer Women 25-30 years melanoma is primary cause of cancer death Women 30-35 years melanoma is number 2 cause of death (after breast cancer) In 1940 the risk of developing melanoma in one s lifetime was 1 in 1,500, in 1980 1 in 250, in 2003 1 in 75 and it is estimated that by 2010, 1 in 50 When melanoma is found early, there is almost a 100% survival rate; when melanoma reaches Stage IV, the median life expectancy is 6 months There have been no significant advances in medical treatment or survival of melanoma in the past 30 years
