Lecture Synopsis: Dental aesthetic in cranio-maxillofacial surgery: what more can we offer? Cranio-maxillofacial surgery is a subspecialized area dealing with isolated or complex facial defects. Complex craniofacial discrepancy includes conditions such as Treacher Collins, Hemifacial Microsomia and syndromic craniosynostosis such as Crouzon, Apert and Pfeiffer syndrome which often are detected at birth. As the preservation and rehabilitation of the functional issues namely mastication, respiratory, speech and visual contributes to the optimization of patients developmental progress, it is vital that any interventions are comprehensively planned and performed. As these patients grow, facial aesthetic component becomes essential as it is directly associated with psychosocial and behavioral development. Facial aesthetics involve normalization of structural discrepancy in which, dental aesthetic plays an important role. This lecture covers briefly how the role of dental aesthetic practitioners has evolved towards contributing to the field of cranio-maxillofacial surgery. 2
