What is this course about? 1.1 Description Nutrition plays an important role in healthy, active lifestyles. This course covers dietary patterns consistent with good health and the relationship of whole foods to nutrients. You will learn how to collect and evaluate habitual dietary intake, undertake physical activity assessment, measure body composition, and learn about the relationship of diet to health and chronic disease. Nutrient requirements for sport and exercise, fad diets, supplementation and inappropriate dietary behaviours will also be covered. 1.2 Course topics Dietary patterns for good health; food groups and association to characterising macro and micronutrients; evidence based guidelines for healthy eating and physical activity; dietary assessment methods and the relationship to nutrient intake; assessment of physical activity and energy expenditure; measurement of body composition and relationship to chronic disease and health; energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate and fluid requirements in relation to physical activity and sport; efficacy and role of supplements; fad diets, scope of practice and referral pathways. 2. You will demonstrate your understanding and ability to analyse and evaluate diet, physical activity and body composition data provided about an active individual and produce a report that communicates your findings. Lifestyle evaluation report You will be provided with a case study scenario of an active individual seeking dietary advice. You will be required to interpret the training schedule and diet, use this information to identify the food groups, number of serves per food group, and sources of key micro- and macronutrients within foods in the diet and compare this to the Australian dietary guidelines for active individuals. You will also interpret their body composition data in relation to preventing chronic disease and/or current level of physical activity. You will get formative (ungraded) feedback on a one-page proposed dietary evaluation in the week 4 workshop. You will be assessed on your ability to: - Correctly evaluate and interpret dietary intake, physical activity data and body composition data - Provide rationale for your interpretation - Utilise appropriate evidence based guidelines - Communicate clearly and professionally Assessment Task 2: Mid-semester exam Goal: Product: Format: Criteria: This mid-semester test is to ensure you have a strong theoretical and knowledge base to support your applied work in the Lifestyle report. Mid semester exam A 1hr online multiple choice exam that will cover the key content areas of dietary patterns, food groups and nutrients in the diet of healthy individuals, and lifestyle evaluation You will be assessed on your ability to: - Accurately identify and describe food groups, including characterising nutrients - Demonstrate a knowledge of the strengths and limitations dietary and physical activity assessment and evaluation methods - Demonstrate a knowledge of protein, fat, carbohydrate and fluid in relation to individual physical activity level and training regime

Assessment Task 3: Final Exam Goal: Product: Format: Criteria: Page 4 The goal of this task is to evidence your understanding of dietary patterns, food groups and nutrients in the diet of healthy individuals in relation to current guidelines, physical activity and energy expenditure measurement and evaluation, role of protein, fat, carbohydrate and fluid in relation to individual physical activity level and training regime and scope of practice. Final exam A 2hr final exam that will assess knowledge of content taught in this course in workshops and online activities, but will primarily focus on the final weeks content. There will be multiple choice and short answer questions to assess your analysis of data. You will be assessed on your ability to: - Accurately identify and describe food groups, including characterising nutrients - Apply knowledge of dietary assessment and evaluation methods - Apply knowledge of physical activity assessment and evaluation methods - Demonstrate an understanding of body composition assessment and evaluation - Demonstrate an understanding of scope of practice 7. What are the course activities? 7.1 Directed study hours The directed study hours listed here are a portion of the workload for this course. A 12 unit course will have total of 150 learning hours which will include directed study hours (including online if required), self-directed learning and completion of assessable tasks. Page 6 10.3 Assessment: Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late.
