Needs Statement There is increasing recognition of the profound impact on quality of life that can accompany impairment in cognitive functioning. New diagnostic technology makes it possible to localize foci of dysfunction in many conditions, such as mild traumatic brain injury, post-stroke dementia, age-associated cognitive decline, and many others. Neurostimulation interventions such as FDA-approved rtms are being increasingly utilized in clinical practice, and new brain stimulation technologies are rapidly being developed. This progress in identifying, understanding, and intervening with respect to impairments in cognition is critically important, to equip clinicians to provide state-of-the-science, evidence-based care for these growing patient populations. Target Audience This activity is designed for specialists in psychiatry and may also be of interest to other health care and mental health care professionals Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: Identify the latest developments in the conceptualization, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the major neurocognitive disorders. Apply the principles of cognitive examination to the evaluation of persons with suspected neurocognitive disorders. Categorize the strengths and weaknesses of the currently available neuroimaging techniques, as well as appraise imaging techniques on the horizon. Identify features of delirium, state the adverse outcomes associated with delirium, recognize evidence-based prevention techniques, and describe recommended management interventions. Restate the definitions of the legal terms: capacity, competency, guardianship, financial power of attorney, and medical power of attorney. Analyze how capacity and competency are assessed and how they relate to guardianship and medical power of attorney. List the neuropsychiatric functions that must work properly for a person to have capacity and discuss how the loss of certain neurologic functions leads to incapacity. Advise families on the aspects of guardianship and medical power of attorney, albeit with legal counsel. Perform a standardized capacity assessment. Identify individuals with cognitive impairment, assess them accurately, and provide a plan of care. Educational Methods n Lecture Evaluation Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
