THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

WELCOME LETTER On behalf of the organizing committee we are delighted to welcome you to the Lean Healthcare Research Symposium 2017. The Symposium is designed to foster understanding of lean in healthcare through presentation and discussion of recent research on the implementation of the lean philosophy and management practices in healthcare organizations and the effects of lean management on healthcare processes and patient outcomes. The Symposium features a keynote address by James Hereford, President and Chief Executive Officer, Fairview Health Services; an overview by Stephen Shortell of the research activities at the recently established Center for Lean Engagement and Research in Healthcare (CLEAR) at UC Berkeley; and five presentations of empirical research on lean in healthcare conducted by investigators in a variety of academic and practice settings. We are indebted to Catalysis, the Lean Enterprise Institute, and the Rona Consulting Group for their sponsorship of CLEAR and specifically for their support of this Symposium. The leaders of these organizations understand the value of actionable research on lean in healthcare and the importance of disseminating that research to clinical and managerial audiences. We would like to express our special gratitude to Rachel Regan, Director of Events and Payment Initiatives at Catalysis, for her support and guidance in the development of the Symposium. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to our Symposium attendees. We look forward to hearing your reactions to the research that is presented and your thoughts on the implications of that research for future lean initiatives. We hope you enjoy the conference and find true value in your participation. With warm regards, Thomas Rundall, Ph.D Janet Blodgett, M.Sc. Regularly updated with recently published research. As of March 2017, there were 108 articles organized by salient topic areas. Lean Action Research Learning Collaborative Will bring together 8 to 10 hospitals/health systems to accelerate the impact of lean on creating greater value for their patients through research that provides actionable knowledge. National survey of lean adoption and implementation in US hospitals Currently in the field, the survey will assess the development and implementation of lean, lean + Six Sigma, or Robust Process Improvement in acute care, general medical, and surgical hospitals in the United States.
