EmoGons ARer Treatment CompleGon of treatment can be stressful and excigng Once treatment is over, many cancer survivors have thoughts and feelings and concerns that they did not expect to have

What is Normal? Once treatment has ended, you may feel like you are not fighgng any more. Now what?

For some, now that the fighgng has stopped, emogons that were put on hold during treatment are very strong Your rougne has changed. Can you go back to your old role in your family and in your life in general?

Re- Defining Your Normal How has your outlook on life changed and how has this impacted your view of yourself and your relagonships? What is more important to you now? What is less important to you now? You need to become very important and your emogonal well being needs to be the focus.

When is it Not Normal?

The What If s You may be paying extra acengon to the aches and pains in your body You may be wondering: Will it come back? What are the chances it will come back? How will I know if it has come back? When will it come back?

Fear The What Ifs are quesgons related to very normal fears. These fears can be paralyzing. They may impact your ability to sleep, eat, concentrate, make simple decisions or communicagng openly with loved ones. FEAR OF REOCCURENCE IS NORMAL.

Arm Yourself with InformaGon Cancer recurrence is defined as the return of cancer arer treatment and arer a period of Gme when the cancer cannot be detected. The length of Gme is not clearly defined. The cancer may come back in the same place it started or somewhere else in the body.

Be Prepared Keep your health insurance. Keep your follow- up visits with your doctor. Get the tests your doctor suggests. Keep comies of your cancer treatments and tests.

Learning To Live With Uncertainty Worrying about recurrence is very normal, especially during the first year arer treatment has ended. As Gme passes, many people say their fear of recurrence lessens. Some events that may trigger fears of recurrence are: Follow- up visits or certain medical tests.

Events That Trigger Fears Anniversary events (date of dx, had surgery or ended treatment). Illness of a family member or friend. Finding out someone you know has had a recurrence. You develop symptoms similar to those when you discovered you had cancer.

How to Deal With Feelings of Fear Pa*ence- acknowledge that this is a process and it Gme, these fears should lessen. Self- Acceptance- your cancer was not a personal failure or something you could have controlled. Don t judge or blame yourselves.

How To Deal With Feelings of Fear Non- Judgment- don t judge how or when you are feeling or reacgng. Feelings and how we cope is very individual. DON T compare yourselves to others. Recognize Your Feelings- allow yourself to feel fear. It is a normal human reacgon. Remain Open- Family and friends may offer suggesgons to make this easier. Think about and discuss the opgons.

CogniGve Behavioral Therapy CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things like people, situagons or events. The benefit of this fact is that we can change the way we think in order to feel/act becer, even if the situagon does not change.

The Situa*on You ve had a bad day, you are feeling frustrated and you decide to go shopping. As you walking in the mall, someone you know walks by, and apparently, ignores you. This starts a cascade of: Thoughts Unhelpful He/ She ignored me Helpful He/ She looks a bit wrapped up in themselves- I wonder if there s something wrong? Emo*onal Feelings Low, sad and rejected Concerned for the other person, posigve Physical Feelings Stomach cramps, low energy, feel sick None- Feel comfortable Ac*on Go home and avoid them Get in touch to make sure they re okay

Tools To Cope Remind yourself that you are doing the best that you can. Spend Gme alone to think about your feelings. Ask friends and family for help. See a therapist if needed. Make Gme for yourself and do the things you enjoy. Take Care of Your Self- health, eat well, sleep well, rest and exercise.
