The Peninsula Network Site Specific Group for Thoracic Oncology Network Annual Report June 205 Acting Chair: Liz Toy Date Approved:

Annual report of the Network Site Specific Group for Thoracic Oncology 3-C-03c Agreement cover sheet The annual report of the Network Site Specific Group for thoracic oncology has been agreed on behalf of group members by: Name Role Date Dr Liz Toy Acting Chair of Thoracic Oncology NSSG This annual report relates to the period from April 204 to May 205 and is compiled to give an overview of the outcomes, achievements and challenges of the Peninsula Cancer Network Site Specific Group for Thoracic Oncology

. Introduction The Peninsula Thoracic Oncology Network Site Specific Group (NSSG) is being reestablished, not having met for several years due to a national cut-back in network support. Peninsula Cancer Network Manager and Administrative Support have been funded for an initial year by the South West Strategic Clinical Network (SWSCN) and a bid for future funding across participating trusts is expected to be approved by mid-205. The group is intending to set up and maintain a strong clinical focus. Members are keen to share the outcomes of good practice and local developments which will enable the group to develop effective clinical pathways of care. 2. Network Configuration The Peninsula thoracic oncology network covers the total catchment population (.78m) of the following organisations: Organisation Referring CCG Plymouth Hospital NHS Trust NEW Devon CCG Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust NEW Devon CCG Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust Kernow CCG South Devon Healthcare NHS South Devon & Torbay CCG Royal Devon & Exeter NHS NEW Devon CCG Note: NEW Devon CCG (Northern, Eastern and Western Devon CCG) 3. Network Group Membership 3-C-0c The Thoracic Oncology NSSG membership is comprised of clinicians, nurses and diagnostic staff representing the MDTs at the above organisations together with nominated user representatives. 4 Terms of Reference 3-C-0c The Thoracic Oncology NSSG Terms of Reference were reviewed by the members present at the meeting held 6 th May 205, amendments made and the final document has been posted on the network website: http://www.swscn.org.uk/networks/cancer/site-specificgroups/ 5 Meetings 3-C-02c The first meeting of the new NSSG was held on 6 th May 205 and attended by a wide representation of clinical and diagnostic members. A further meeting has been scheduled for 6 th November 205. Copies of the notes of the meetings and supporting documents can be found on the Peninsula Cancer Network website at: http://www.swscn.org.uk/networks/cancer/sitespecific-groups/peninsula-site-specific-groups/lung-ssg/peninsula-thoracic-oncology-ssgmeeting-archive/

Clinical Guidelines 3-C-04c The Thoracic Oncology NSSG confirmed they will continue to follow NICE guidelines and the latest Royal College of Pathologists Guidelines 204. 7. Pathways 3-C-06c The pathway for Molecular Genetics will be reviewed with a view to saving time, money and patient intervention by sending a single block sample that would be used for both EGFR and histopathology investigations. 8. Audit 3-C-08c The Thoracic Oncology NSSG confirmed its commitment to the National Clinical Lung Cancer Audit (LUCADA) and the Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD). The group will support and encourage junior members of staff to carry out audits and provide a forum for the network presentation of any local audits. 9. Patient Representation 3-C-07c Survival rates for thoracic patients are considerably lower than other cancer sites and it would be difficult to recruit user representatives. Engagement with patient support groups such as the Roy Castle Foundation was felt to be more appropriate. 0. Research and Clinical Trials 3-C-8g The group will discuss recruitment into clinical trials at each NSSG meeting. A report highlighting the current and proposed recruitment status of each MDT was circulated to the group in May 205. The Cancer Research Network transitioned in April 204 into fifteen local research networks, aligned with the Academic Health Service Network. The new South West Peninsula Cancer Research Network (PCRN) was set up to include: Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust Plymouth Hospital NHS Trust Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust South Devon Healthcare NHS Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Taunton and Somerset NHS Yeovil District Hospital NHS

The new PCRN will: Track EOI return rates Identify and promote new studies Identify blocks to recruitment and escalate Coordinate regional meetings, forums, workshops and share good practice Attend and support NSSG meetings by providing recruitment data and trials information Support Peer Review The Peninsula is supported by: Duncan Wheatley, Clinical Specialty Lead - duncan.wheatley@rcht.cornwall.nhs.uk Wendy Cook, Research Delivery Manager wcook@nhs.net Ann Courtman, Administrator ann.courtman@nhs.net Dr Petra Jankowska, Subspecialty Lead petra.jankowska@tst.nhs.uk Latest recruitment data and overview of studies currently open can be found in The Lung SSG Research Report May 205 on the network website: http://www.swscn.org.uk/networks/cancer/site-specific-groups/peninsula-site-specificgroups/lung-ssg/peninsula-thoracic-oncology-ssg-meeting-archive/
