HEALTHY, HUNGRY FREE KIDS ACT (2010) CHANGES SCHOOL FOOD ENVIRONMENT Improves child nutrition and advance nutrition quality of school meals USDA oversight of ALL foods & beverages sold/served in schools Nutrition standards for ALL foods & beverages sold outside of the Federal child nutrition programs in schools USDA s objectives: Focus on reimbursable meal program as the major source of food & beverages offered at schools Encourage consumption of healthy snacks and beverages to students outside the meal program 2

HIGHLIGHTS FOR SY19 No revisions to current Smart Snack regulations Mandatory Administrative Review of GCSNP Program USDA will be inspecting our schools for regulatory compliance Smart Snacks is an area they will be reviewing 3

WHEN DO THE STANDARDS APPLY? School day is the period from the midnight before, to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day.

FUNDRAISERS If items meet requirements= No Restrictions Happening during non-school hours= No Restrictions Happening during school hours & items DO NOT meet requirements= Exemptions may be used 30 per local school No longer than 3 consecutive days in length Complete Tracking Sheet Managed by the local schools- keep on file for internal audits NOTE: Exempted items that do not meet Smart Snack Requirements may not be sold 30 minutes before until 30 minutes after meal service (breakfast and lunch) anywhere on the school campus 6
