COURSE DIRECTOR Nancy Young, DMD, is the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University. She received a MEd. at UGA and her DMD from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. After practicing for 5 years in private practice, she began teaching in the Department of General Dentistry at the DCG where she served as a team leader. Dr. Young is an active member in the ADA, Georgia Dental Association, Hinman Society, and the AAWD. Dr. Young received the 2017 DCG Outstanding Faculty Award, DCG ASDA 2017 Advocate Award, 2017 International College of Dentists Outstanding Faculty Member Award, and the 2018 GDA/ASDA Outstanding Faculty Award. AU Faculty Michael Pruett, DMD, is an Assistant Professor in the department of Restorative Sciences, and Director of the General Practice Residency Program at The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University. He received his DMD from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, and then completed a two-year General Practice Residency at the University of Virginia. Upon completion, he became the Director of Dentistry at Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. While in Hartford he also served as the Assistant Program Director of the General Practice Residency at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Pruett has placed and restored dental implants for the last 26 years and maintains an active hospital dentistry practice within the DCG. He is the co-director of the AU/AAID Maxi-Course and several other hands-on continuing dental education courses at Augusta University; which include implant placement, sinus augmentation, and I.V. Sedation. Dr. Pruett lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of topics. He is a Fellow in the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and a Diplomate in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is also active in many dental organizations including ADA, Georgia Dental Association, Hinman Dental Society, American Society of Dental Anesthesiology, Academy of Osseointegration and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Pruett was the 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award for The
Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University and was also the recipient of the Prestigious Hinman Medallion in 2018. PURPOSE The focus of this evidence-based course will be to first expose the participant on the preparation and prevention of medical emergencies they may face in their dental office. Followed by an in-depth coverage of evaluating and managing medically complex patients. OBJECTIVES Following the completion of this program, the participants will be able to: Recognize and treat common medical emergencies that arise in the dental office; and prepare an office with the appropriate equipment and drugs for management of medical emergencies. Recognize a variety of systemic diseases and how they will impact dental care.
