DementiAbility Methds ffers innvative, evidence-based apprach t wrking with lder adults wh are living with cgnitive lss, using Dr. Maria Mntessri s Principles alng with research frm diverse disciplines in aging and dementia. The aim is t supprt the persn in a prepared envirnment, ffering cgnitive strategies that are develped accrding t needs, interests, skills and abilities. The emphasis is n enriching and enhancing daily life by prviding interventins that build in supprts that will maintain/enhance functin while als prviding pprtunities t be engaged in life and living accrding t the needs and abilities f each persn. Research has prvided clear evidence f enhanced functin when memry cueing, sequencing and ther such strategies, have been put in place. Als, increased levels f engagement and participatin in activities are witnessed when DementiAbility appraches are implemented with persns with dementia. Participants in this wrkshp will learn abut what happens t the brain and memry when ne has been affected by dementia. Based n this infrmatin yu will discver hw t create supprtive strategies/interventins accrding t what we knw and what we bserve. Wrkshp participants will engage in practical hands n grup wrk that is aimed at applying these innvative techniques. The first day f the prgram fcuses n the facts (knwledge) and the secnd day fcuses n putting the cncepts int practice fr specific clients, activities and envirnments. Objectives: 1. Identify the key cmpnents f DementiAbility Methds: The Mntessri Way based n knwledge abut: a) Dementia, excess disability and spared capacity; b) memry (prcedural and declarative); and c) the imprtance f creating supprtive envirnments and envirnmental cueing. 2. Describe DementiAbility Methds: The Mntessri Way Mdel and knw hw t put each cmpnent part int practice, with an emphasis n understanding the persn behind the dementia and recgnizing that prgramming/gals/philsphy f care are t be based n the individual s needs, strengths, skills, interests and abilities. 3. List and describe the Mntessri Principles, as mdified fr dementia, and understand hw they can be adpted as a philsphy f care as well as a framewrk fr prgramming. 4.
