WHO WE ARE Action Cancer is Northern Ireland s leading, local cancer charity. THE DIFFERENCE WE MAKE Every year Action Cancer helps to save and support 50,000 people across NI through the delivery of our services. Here are some figures to give you a snap shot of the difference we are making: Action Cancer now screens more than 10,000 women a year for breast cancer For every 1,000 breast screenings, 6 or 7 women have their cancer detected when it may have gone unnoticed Nearly 500,000 children have taken part in our Health Action schools programme 2440 people are supported every year through our support and therapeutic services OUR VISION A future where cancer risk is reduced, cancers are detected early, successfully treated and people impacted are supported and empowered. OUR MISSION Action Cancer is a Northern Ireland charity dedicated to saving lives and supporting people through cancer awareness, prevention, detection and support. The Big Bus travels to over 225 locations across Northern Ireland every year OUR COMMITMENT 50,000 LOCAL PEOPLE ENGAGED IN OUR SERVICES 225 BIG BUS VISITS THROUGHTOUT NORTHERN IRELAND 10,000 WOMEN SCREENED FOR BREAST CANCER Action Cancer is a socially responsible charity committed to making a difference to Our People, Our Community and Our Environment. 04

OUR IMPACT SERVICE USER EXPERIENCES 60 YEAR OLD LEONARD BRERETON Having been through prostate cancer myself I know the devastating impact a cancer diagnosis can have not only on the individual but on the family. I ve signed up as a volunteer on Action Cancer s Peer Mentoring programme so I can help other people, I will offer a listening ear to men affected by cancer and advise them on what support is available. With Action Cancer s support I can help lighten the load that they carry. 12 YEAR OLD WHO ATTENDED COUNSELLING I liked working with the counsellor because she respected my age and didn t treat me like a baby. Before my counselling I would cry an awful lot about not being with my dad. Counselling has helped me to deal with the sadness and look back at all the nice memories. I liked my counselling because I think it is so good to talk about something that upsets you with a person that is not a member of your family. I enjoyed the drawing because it helped me release my feelings and emotions onto a page. GERALDINE SHARKEY Geraldine Sharkey was diagnosed with breast cancer following a visit to the Big Bus in Omagh, 2013. I am pleased to report that I am now cancer free. I have Action Cancer to thank for this. If I had waited to the age of 50, to be called by the NHS for my screening, I dread to think how rampant the cancer would have been by that point. I m firmly of the opinion that Action Cancer saved my life and I am now passionate about getting other women to book their screening appointment. Early detection saves lives; it s as simple as that. 05

OUR SERVICES BREAST SCREENING Action Cancer is the only charity in the UK and Ireland to offer free breast screening to women aged 40 49 and 70 plus who fall outside the NHS age range (50 70). We have been screening women in Northern Ireland for breast cancer since 1978, ten years ahead of the NHS. At Action Cancer House On board the Big Bus Over 10,000 screenings per year On average, 6 or 7 cancers per 1,000 screenings detected Early detection saves lives Peace of mind to local women HEALTH PROMOTION Health promotion aims to empower and educate individuals and their communities to make informed, positive healthy decisions. At Action Cancer our two key health promotion messages are prevention and early detection. We deliver these messages throughout Northern Ireland. 50% of cancers are preventable with the right lifestyle choices Raise awareness Lifestyle choices Schools, communities and workplaces M.O.T. health checks SUPPORT & THERAPEUTIC SERVICES Offering services to adults & children from 5 years old Services available to an individual diagnosed with cancer or to anyone who has been affected by the diagnosis of a family member or friend Available free of charge at any stage of the cancer journey Help and support through physical and emotional issues Therapies include aromatherapy, reflexology, therapeutic gentle massage therapy, relaxation therapy, touch therapy, pain & symptom control, acupuncture and various other treatments Counselling and peer mentoring programme offered Services are available at Action Cancer House, Belfast and regionally throughout Northern Ireland THE BIG BUS Action Cancer s mobile resource centre, the Big Bus, brings its services to over 225 locations across Northern Ireland every year. I really enjoy my time and meeting different members of the public, knowing that by volunteering I am supporting a great cause. Volunteer testimonial from our Lisburn Store 07

When we were first asked about the Shop s Challenge we did not need much encouragement. We had just decided that the company should identify a charity for 2017 and that nominated charity would benefit from any fund raising activities throughout the year. We were also keenly aware of the opportunities internally for team building and generally promoting a culture of collaboration in the business. Who better than Action Cancer! We were really impressed at the level of support that we received - someone from the head office was there every step of the way. The launch event, the supporting calls and emails and of course the amazing manager Elizabeth on the day itself. all of it was much appreciated. We loved every minute of it even the Belfast Marathon and Zip Line across the Lagan! The Shop s Challenge ticked so many boxes and there simply isn t a down side. WINNER SHOPS CHALLENGE 2017 Sinead Mulholland Team Solutionz Limited, Community Engagement Award Runner up and Special Recognition Award Winner 2017 8 COMPANIES 16 STORES RAISED FOR 70,000 ACTION CANCER SPONSORED BY 08

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? Formulate a core team and allocate a team leader Devise a fundraising action plan Engage your wider organisations and keep them up to date with what is happening and why you are involved Involve your clients and suppliers: invite them to the Takeover day or ask them to donate a raffle prize and support your fundraising Devise a marketing strategy: how are you going to generate footfall into your store on Takeover day? Are you having a themes for the day? Engage with local businesses and schools, let them know that you are supporting a local charity in their local community Get to know your shop manager, they are the best to advise on how to ensure maximum sales Speak to Action Cancer: we can give lots of tips, advice and provide marketing materials Celebrate your teams success and involvement at a gala dinner awards ceremony Most importantly have fun! It s for charity and you are involving your staff for a great cause and a fun event This event is a highlight in the M&S calendar- our staff, our customers, and our communities absolutely love it! We are able to engage our staff with a worthwhile local charity and, at the same time, discover skills and talents we never knew we had. We have a wide network of shops and we naturally use this in the fundraising element, however, it really is the combined effort of a core team of 10 that really makes this event work. Their enthusiasm and passion make the event the success it is, and of course, this has a direct impact on the other team members.
