Information vs. Transformation
P.E. Teachers are really personal trainers who specialize in youth fitness/ athletic development. We have a duty to positively impact the lives of ALL students, sedentary to superstar athlete. In this light we are very different from the average personal trainer at Globo Gym and sport coaches yet at the same time we all are related. I believe in teaching youth general athletic skills they can utilize to achieve/maintain a healthy life along with improve performance in a sport if they are involved in one. The bottom line is children need to enjoy moving, have successes, and gain general athletic abilities early in life to lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy living. Nobody does things they are not good at or dislike doing.
Outcome Based Combination Form Based Praise Effort Optimal Technique
PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS Body Awareness Coordination Rhythm Static Balance Dynamic Balance Kinesthetic Differentiation Spatial Awareness Object Manipulation Gameplay & Cooperation METHODS Outcome Based Teaching Bio- Motor Skill Development (Speed, Strength, Flexibility, Endurance, Coordination) over just Aerobic Conditioning Plasticity of Brain Everyday Fun, Exciting, Gameplay Champion of the Day
Body Awareness / Movement Exploration Ex. Scramble to Balance Object Manipulation Ex. Cone Catching Game Coordination Ex. Tag Game Cooperation Ex. Team Rope Pulls
Builds muscle mass / coordination Rapid brain development (100,000 1,000,000 NEW neural connections) Builds skills & self- confidence Constructs view of the world & their place in it Rigidly achievement oriented to satisfy demand for objective measurable data Provides positive emotions and achievement which diminishes cortisol that will lead to a brain developing fully while TV, video games, and rigid exercise produces cortisol Sustained play produces endorphins which in turn enhances the production of dopamine which creates a sense of well- being which tells the brain it is safe to develop the frontal lobe Gives children a sense of mastery (accomplish things they set out to do) which in turn boosts self- esteem and motivation. Finally, all the benefits of regular exercise
PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS Enhance Coordination Movement Economy Multiple Planes of Movement METHODS Outcome Based Teaching Introduce Form Based Teaching Champion of the Day Student created and submitted games to give them ownership of the class.
Active ROM / Self- Myofascial Release 2-3 Exercises Ex. Quadruped T- Spine Extension/Rotation General Preparation 2-4 Exercises Ex. Skipping Coordination 2-4 Exercises Ex. Plyo- Step Starts Systemic Strength 1-2 Exercises Ex. Squats, Pull- Ups, Push- Ups Game Play Coaches or Student Choice Ex. Tag, Small Sided Soccer, Etc.
PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS Train with Specificity/ Purpose Self- Myofascial Release Corrective Exercises Mobility Dynamic/Explosive Power Speed/Agility Strength Conditioning Flexibility METHODS Mostly Form Based Teaching Some Outcome Based Teaching Never Lose ALL Gameplay Programming and Methods Depend on Desired Outcome
Self- Myofascial Release Ex. Hip Flexors Mobility/Corrective/ Dynamic Warm- Up Ex. Skips with Correctives/Mobility Between Speed/Agility/Explosive Power Ex. Hill Runs or Acceleration Technique Ex. Random Changes of Direction Ex. Med Ball Throws or Olympic Lifts Strength Training Ex. Squats, Pull- Ups, Push- Ups Conditioning Ex. Cardiac Output or Intervals Flexibility (As Needed) Ex. 3- Way Hamstring Stretch
Create a culture of fun, caring, excitement, passion and high expectations ALL about the relationships Develop the student from the inside- out meaning develop your students as people first and training simply becomes the means. This is what keeps your program for getting cut, NOT data.
All Assessments are Valuable Formal/Informal Quantitative Qualitative Used to to Directly Impact Training Design Assessment Design Training Implement Training Repeat Process Normative Data Comparisons are Fine, End Goal is Improving the Students Where They Are.
