KOMPUTER ENTHUSIASTS OF GREATER SEATTLE I hope that those of you who attended the Annual KEGaBuck$ Auction last month had a good time at the event. There were lots of great items available for your bidding, with several items that were brand new; never having been out of the box. I want to offer a special thank you to the generous folks who donated the new, unused items to the auction. According to our notes, the highest number of KEGaBuck$ that were bid on a single item was 7,500. On the other end of the scale, several items went for only fifty KEGaBuck$ so no member should be lamenting that he/she couldn t afford to bid on anything. We all owe a big Thank you to all of the folks who donated items and to the members who worked hard to make the auction run smoothly. A special thanks goes out to Sally Ann who was involved in almost every aspect of preparing for and conducting the auction. Unfortunately, I was out of town during most of the last-minute preparations but she made sure that all of the pre-auction chores were completed. This auction was my third effort as KEGS auctioneer. I had a good time and hope you did, too. Thanks to Gordon Young for helping out with the auctioneer duties. Great job by all involved! Thanks again! The topic of the presentation at the July General Meeting will be Ransomware/ Crypto Viruses. Obviously, this is a timely subject in light of the numerous ransomware attacks that have been in the news lately. Please remember that the July General Meeting will be held at the Bellevue Regional Library at 1111 110 th Ave. NE in Bellevue. As you may recall, we cannot meet at the Peter Kirk Community Center during July or August as they have another activity that uses their main meeting room during those months. I hope to see each of you at the General Meeting on July 10 th in Bellevue. Continuing on the subject of hacking attacks against various computers, both personal and those belonging to organizations, I find it very interesting that most experts agree that many of the attacks could have been avoided had the operators/ owners of the hacked computers merely kept up with the various updates that are distributed by Microsoft and other companies that provide popular software. This fact should motivate each of us to check often for updates to important software such as operating systems and anti-virus programs. As I m sure you know, updates are released very frequently. It s in our best interest to install them as soon as possible!

Renewal forms are available at www.kegs.org; just fill one out, print it and send it along with your check to the address shown on the form. An even easier way would be to bring your completed form and your check/cash to the next General Meeting and give them to Dick as you sign in for the meeting. As many of you know, KEGS is a member of the national user group organization called Association of Personal Computer User Groups (APCUG). One of the benefits that you may not be aware of is the ability that all of us have to access computer-related videos that have been created by APCUG experts on many different topics. Just go to www.youtube.com and search for APCUG and I am sure that you will find video presentations on one or more topics that are of interest to you. Lastly, I must sadly report that one of our long-time members of KEGS passed away about ten days ago. Barbara Marasco was a hard-working and important member of our organization and gave many hours of her time and talents to serving on our Board and performing the many chores associated with maintaining our membership database. She was a very caring person who was always friendly and helpful to her many friends and acquaintances. We will miss her very much. That s it for now.
