Viruses HPV human papillomavirus 40 types of HPV infect genital area other types on feed and hand Most people have HPV and don t know it Some can lead to cervical cancer, genital and throat cancers HPV can hid in the body for years Most people have it Most can go away by themselves and don t cause cancer But abnormal cells can develop from some types of HPV that will lead to cancer Skin to skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sex HPV vaccine, condoms reduce risk but not that effective

Viruses HIV causes AIDs Human immunodeficiency virus, breaks down immune system AIDs is advanced stage of HIV Can take 10 years to develop HIV symptoms Swollen glands in throat, armpit, or groin Fever like symptoms then no symptoms for many years Badly damaged immune system Thrush (thick whit coating of tongue/mouth caused by yeast infection) Severe vaginal yeast infections Chronic infections Easy bruising, frequent diarrhea, cough, shortness of breath, growths on skin, bleeding from growths, rash, numbness, confusion, personality change No cure, expensive medicine Sex without condom, contact with infected blood/semen/vaginal secretions

Insects Pubic lice tiny insects that attach themselves to skin and hair in pubic region crabs Millions of people get pubic lice per year No symptoms for 5 days Intense itching in genitals or anus Fever, irritable, lice and small egg sac Yes treatment Spread by contact (skin, clothes, etc)

Stigma a mark of disgrace STDs are rising in teen boys and girls Most of them did not know they had STDs and most of the girls had never had sexual intercourse

How to be safe 1. Before sexual relations with new partner, ask for this information 2. After new sexual partners get tested One night of not wanting to embarrass yourself can lead to life-threatening disease You never know who will have an STD because they are so common Be safe Be educated
