New York Association on Independent Living s 2015 Back to the Future Conference is a statewide conference with more than 250 people in attendance. NYAIL represents Independent Living Centers (ILCs) throughout New York State, with combined revenues of $143 million. ILCs serve more than 87,000 people annually, including more than 47,500 people with disabilities, 10,800 family members, and 4,900 businesses. NYAIL and its member ILCs are committed to a future in which all doors grant access to opportunity, full participation, independent living, integration and economic self-sufficiency. Although New Yorkers with disabilities constitute more than 10% of the state population and are productive members of society, they have more difficulty than those without disabilities in finding employment, earning decent wages, and making ends meet. Such difficulties arise from institutional barriers and from the public s lack of awareness and education about disabilities. Independent Living advocates will convene at this year s conference in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act to reflect on the past while organizing for the future.
