Set up in 2013, Curved 2 Straight is a organization trying to bring awareness to Scoliosis. Scoliosis has affected many people with 3 or 4 children out of every 1000 children are affected by Scoliosis. Slide 3 What is it? Scoliosis is the abnormal curvature of the spine to the sides. It does not usually cause noticeable symptoms in children other than affecting the appearance of the back. Physical signs of scoliosis may include: a visibly curved spine one shoulder or hip being more prominent than the other clothes not hanging properly a tendency to lean to one side Back pain usually only affect adults with scoliosis.
Slide 4 Physical appearance Signs of scoliosis include: one shoulder being higher than the other one shoulder blade being more prominent than the other one hip being more prominent than the other clothes not hanging properly the child may lean to one side If you or your child is usually in a wheelchair, there may be a tendency to lean to one side. Make an appointment to see your GP if you notice any of the symptoms listed above in yourself or your child. Slide 5 Back pain Most cases of scoliosis do not cause back pain. However, the condition can become painful if the curvature of the spine worsens. This is more common in adults who had mild scoliosis that became gradually more severe. The pain is usually located at the site of the curve, with nearby muscles also feeling sore and tender. Some people find the pain is worse when they are sitting or standing and improves when they lie down flat on their back or on their side. In other cases, the back pain is constant whatever position you are in. You may feel pain that travels from your spine into your hip, legs or, less commonly, your arms. This can happen when you re standing or walking. Slide 6 Other symptoms Although uncommon, scoliosis can also affect the nervous system. Problems occur when the bones in the spine compress on one or more nerve endings. This may lead to symptoms including: a loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence) a loss of bowel control (bowel incontinence) numbness or weakness in the legs
in men, an inability to get or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction) Slide 7 What can Scoliosis do to you? This is a patient who is pre-op. (Their due to have the operation) As you can see, the spine has is curved. Slide 8 What can Scoliosis do to you? This is the same person, who is Post-Op. As you can see, they have metal rods attached to their spines, attached by screws, which makes the spine straight. Slide 9 What is Scoliosis? What do the Pre-op pictures make you think/feel? What do the Post-op pictures make you think/feel?
Slide 13 Discuss the questions on the slide: How do you think someone with Scoliosis would feel? Write down what you think on a piece of A4 paper. It doesn t have to be long, just a response that could be used with this program in the future. Slide 14 Show the video from You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dhlnqftlro Slide 15 Operation: What Happens? You can see the videos of the surgery on YouTube, but a warning, they aren t for the faint hearted. Also, this is what a Scoliosis operating table looks like: Slide 16 Post-op: What happens? Talk about/recite what it says on the slide and show the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gix66oxi7mg Slide 17 The Future Show the video on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csjjurhogbo Slide 18 Did you know? Tell the class the fact about Usain Bolt and Princess Eugenie : Usain Bolt and Princess Eugenie of York both had scoliosis?
Slide 19 The work Give the class out the questions, and give them time to answer the questions, then after some time, read out the answers to the class: Please fill in the work sheet and answer the questions to see how well you have been listening!! Slide 20 The feedback Pass out the Feedback sheet, give the class time to answer it and then collect it in: Please fill in the feedback form, so that we can hopefully improve for the future. Thank you for using Curved 2 Straight awareness program.
