What is a smile transformation? As its name suggests, a smile transformation is a complete makeover of the appearance and/or function of your smile. Using a range of dental procedures, both the health and aesthetics of your smile can be completely overhauled. Depending on the current state of your teeth, there are a number of different procedures available which can reshape and rejuvenate your smile. We ll take a closer look at these in the coming pages. WHY UNDERGO A SMILE TRANSFORMATION? Many people undergo smile transformations; some choose to undergo this procedure as they were not able to afford treatment, or did not have access to sufficient treatment when they were younger. Some may wish to undergo a smile transformation as the current state of their teeth makes it difficult to do things like chew food or speak properly. Or you may just be unhappy with the overall aesthetics of your smile. Regardless of your reasoning, by using a combination of restorative and cosmetic treatments, a healthier, brighter and improved smile can be achieved through a smile transformation. Treatable v non-treatable teeth There are often two types of teeth we encounter for smile makeovers; those which a treatable, and those which are not. Non-treatable teeth are those which cannot be saved. Often due to gum disease or decay, teeth can get to a point where their roots are just not salvageable. In these circumstances, dental implants may be recommended to replace the teeth and restore the health of the mouth. Treatable teeth, on the other hand, are those teeth which can be saved and restored. Though damaged or broken, the roots of these teeth are still strong enough that the teeth can be restored. For these teeth, there are a variety of options available to restore the smile. A combination of procedures which can strengthen the teeth, such as porcelain crowns, implants, and bridges, can be used. In addition, cosmetic solutions such as veneers or teeth whitening can also be utilised to improve the overall appearance of the teeth. Our smile transformation treatments VENEERS Porcelain veneers are the secret behind many a dazzling Hollywood smile! Essentially they are thin, yet strong porcelain shells which are bonded to your teeth to improve their appearance. They are handcrafted to fit your teeth perfectly, and blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. Veneers are generally only applied to the front and most visible teeth, and can be used to correct cracked, chipped, stained, or crooked teeth. They re also resistant to staining, so they ll keep your smile looking fabulous for years to come. If you choose to receive veneers, you may also wish to undergo a whitening treatment first to brighten the rest of your teeth as the porcelain isn t affected by whitening treatments. TEETH WHITENING Teeth whitening can be a quick and easy way to make your smile really shine! At Nick Sheptooha Dental Practice we use Philips Zoom! Whitening System, with both take-home and in-chair whitening options available. Thanks to its light-activated process, inchair Zoom! Whitening can lighten your smile by as much as 8-10 shades in just one hour. We also offer take-home kits for those with a busy lifestyle. The results are still amazing, but they do take a little longer to achieve. CROWNS/BRIDGES Dental crowns and bridges are common dental procedures to strengthen and replace broken or missing teeth. When undergoing a smile makeover, crowns and bridges can be used to replace or repair any damaged or diseased teeth. Dental crowns, or caps, are porcelain prosthetics that cover a damaged tooth. In the past, crowns were often made out of metals such as gold or amalgam. Nowadays porcelain is the preferred choice as it blends in with the rest of the mouth, and is much better for your health. Placing bridges is a similar process to placing crowns. Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They work by using the teeth either side of the gap as an anchor which supports the prosthetic bridge. INLAYS/ONLAYS Inlays and onlays are reconstructive procedures used to repair broken or damaged teeth. Often they are used for teeth that are healthy enough not to require a crown, but decayed or damaged enough to not be suitable for a filling. They are the prosthetic part of a tooth. Inlays are the smaller of the two and are used for larger cavities. For more extensive damage, an onlay is used. DENTAL IMPLANTS Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth, or teeth so badly damaged they cannot be saved. Essentially a dental implant is a titanium rod which replaces the root of the missing tooth. Once the implant has been placed, it is then left to heal and bond with the surrounding bone and gum, a process known as osseointegration. After this an abutment is attached to the implant, and a crown, bridge, or more complex structure is attached to replace the missing tooth or teeth. Dental implants look and work exactly like your natural teeth. Not only does this treatment restore the form and function of your smile, but it stops the jaw bone from dissolving, which can leave you with a sunken and prematurely aged appearance. Overcoming dental fear Unfortunately many people have had less-than-ideal experiences at the dentist in the past, often during childhood, and find they experience extreme anxiety just at the thought of having to get in the chair. This can stop them from undergoing dental treatment they desperately need, leaving them with massive problems which become very expensive to rectify. At Nick Sheptooha Dental Practice, our aim is for you to receive the treatment you need in true comfort, and without any pain. In fact, our philosophy is Our Aim Is No Pain. To help with this, we offer a number of different solutions. If a distraction is enough for you, you can watch a movie through our video glasses, or listen to the latest music. We re even happy for you to bring along your own DVD or music. For those whose anxiety is stronger we offer Nitrous Oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas or happy gas. We administer the gas through a comfortable mask placed over your face, for up to a few minutes. This leaves you feeling relaxed and sedated. Following this, we ll administer a local anaesthetic if it s needed, and proceed with your treatment. At the end of your treatment, you ll then be given pure oxygen to breathe for a few minutes, reversing the effects of the gas. Unlike IV sedation or general anaesthetic, you generally should be able to drive yourself home after this treatment. Finance options We understand that dental treatment can be expensive, and can become a barrier to people receiving dental treatment. That s why we offer finance through DentiCare Payment Solutions. This automated system breaks your costs into more manageable bites (pun intended). You ll need to pay 20% of the total on the day, but then you can pay the remainder off over a set period of up to 6 months. If you d like to know more about our finance option, please ask us!
