Relay for Life Fairfield University American Cancer Society Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.
What is Relay For Life? On average, 1 in 3 people contract cancer, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease. Cancer does not discriminate, does not show mercy. It attacks husbands, wives, children, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers alike. But we can fight back. You can join over 1,000 students this year as we try to fight for a cure. Relay For Life, the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, is the largest non-profit fundraising activity in the world. This overnight team event, held in over 32 countries, celebrates cancer survivorship while simultaneously raising money to support cancer research, education, and patient services. Involving more than 1,000 participants, cancer survivors, and visitors from the local community, Fairfield University Relay For Life raises more than $25,000 per year. On April 12 th, the seventh annual Fairfield University Relay For Life will attempt to raise more money than ever before. Achieving such a lofty goal will not be possible without corporate support from our local community. We would like for you to be part of this remarkable event by joining us as a sponsor. How can you help? Monetary Donations: Every donation Relay For Life receives goes to the American Cancer Society. Your donation will help further cancer research and provide aid and recognition to those already diagnosed. As you know, Boston has some of world s most prestigious hospitals, and patients travel from far away to receive cancer treatment here. Funds donated to the American Cancer Society have already helped to build a new Hope Lodge in Boston, which provides a place for patients and families to stay during these treatments. Your tax-deductible donation will help fund these lodges, among other things. In-Kind Donations: These donations include entertainment or food for the event and Survivor Gifts, which are given to all our thirty-plus survivor guests. Additionally, we raffle off some items to raise more money. Any type of donation will have a lasting effect on cancer patients, cancer survivors, and Relay supporters, and will help to draw positive attention to your corporation through numerous advertising opportunities. Making A Team: Teams are the backbone of our event. They not only raise money, but at the event, cheer on survivors and raise morale for those going through treatment. Creating a team with your business will be beneficial not only to the individual employees participating in the event, but to the whole company because you get to see the value of your contribution. In addition, this would be another opportunity for your business to advertise and interact in a positive way with the community. Every donation that a corporate team raises counts as corporate sponsorship, and therefore, you get the same benefits as you would for a monetary donation. To recognize your company as a corporate sponsor, we would like to feature you at our event in a way that honors your donation. Please contact Danielle Pittala or Chris Finelli at fairfieldurelayforlife@gmail.com Thank you for considering a sponsorship of Fairfield University Relay For Life. Cancer is the leading cause of death in the United States. By taking part in Relay, you make a lasting, positive impact on your community as you join us in the fight against cancer.
Meet a Cancer Survivor: Anthony Pietrantonio I m a 21 year old with a successful career ahead of me in the electrical industry. I m fairly new to being a survivor and I m enjoying every day of it. In December of 2009, I was just a normal guy getting up everyday and going to work. I noticed a small pea size bump under my left arm. As the lump continued to grow to the size of a lemon I went to my doctor and I began several weeks of medical testing. Conclusively, I was diagnosed with Burkitts Non-Hodgekins Lymphoma. After an initial surgery was unsuccessful in removing the entire tumor, I was told I would need intensive chemotherapy treatments. And then, my fight began. Five days a week inpatient treatments every other week along with intermittent outpatient treatments for the next four months. I celebrated my 20 th birthday in the hospital and had Easter dinner from my hospital bed. Throughout treatment, I never lost hope and always stayed positive. After many complications and side affects, a pet scan revealed, the intensive treatments had worked, and I was cancer free as of May 4, 2010. In February 2011, I participated in my first, and certainly not my last, Relay For Life at Boston College. I relayed for myself and my Grandfather, who passed away 2 years ago from lung cancer. I relay for hope that one day, no one will have to deal with having loved ones go through the fight I and many others have gone through because of this terrible disease. I know that without the cancer research that the American Cancer Society s Relay For life helps fund, I, as a cancer survivor may not have been here to write this.
