the Fund Raiser Volume 12 No 2 April, 2015 Fund-raising Consultants to Shriners International With membership Comes Value! Message from Ralph Robshaw 2015 President... Here is our second electronic newsletter to our Scafra Members and Associate members and to past members that we invite to be members for this coming year and beyond. We hope you enjoyed the first edition for those who received. We discovered that we had a number of emails rejected or not delivered or diverted to junk mail due to the size of the edition and configuration of some computers. We are working on improving our delivery process and it is certainly a work in progress. We anticipate our newsletter will be going out 6 times this year and hope that you will find it informative and helpful. We have made several changes to the way we operate and communicate. Our new Third Vice President Nick created a Face Book page that you or any member of your Temple can sign on to once you have paid your dues to the association. This will open the door to direct participation and discussion with like minded Shriners from around the globe. It has been used actively among the Temples who have paid their dues. If you wish to use Face Book be sure to have your dues paid and then contact the SCAFRA Secretary/Treasurer and let him know that the payment is on the way. Then Nick Wladyczak 3rd V.P., who is administrating the Face Book page, will activate your Temple for access to the Face Book site. MEMBERSHIP IS CRITICAL Once again we ask for your help with membership, we are all in this for the long haul so please help us in the Fund Raiser April, 2015 1 getting more members to support this great organization. In 1986 when this Association was formed we had well in excess of 100 members but due to circumstances beyond our control, like 9/11 catastrophe, an increase in activity by the animal activists, and the recession we have suffered these past few years. Leadership in the Shrine cut expenses and determined that education and training were a luxury they would do without. This is wrong thinking! Never before was there a need of education and training for our members as there is now. Those with experience are being claimed by the Black Camel or just tired, and now we have a number of eager individuals who do not know where to get help and education for fund raising. Every Temple would benefit, while there is a cost yes. It can be proven how a simple act or change in process learned at the seminars can be taken back and turned into multiple dollars of income. Now is the time to join SCAFRA and reap the benefits by being active with some of the best fund raisers in the Shrine. Once again remember membership is very important to us, so please help get the word out. Get your membership renewals in now.

The Greatest Show On Earth Continues With Changes Many of us have understood that the day was going to come that the Circus World would be changing for many, many reasons. Sure we suffered with the insults and propaganda circulated by certain organizations and while they have taken credit for the recent changes the truth lies much deeper. There is no denying that the work of PETA has certainly had an impact on legislators and the result is that while the public still requests animal acts, it is getting more difficult to plan routes and get venues due to local prohibition for transporting exotic animals through their jurisdictions. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus have announced they will be phasing out their shows iconic elephants by the year 2018. Treatment of animals has been at the center of the publics concern for the elephants being in travelling trucks for long periods of time. Feld Entertainment, Ringling s parent company owns 43 elephants: 29 of the gigantic beasts live at the company s 80 hectare Center for Elephant Conservation in Central Florida, 13 will continue to tour with the Circus until they retire to the Center in 2018, and they have one elephant on loan to the Fort Worth Zoo for breeding purposes. Now that this dark day has come to our fund raising project what are our alternatives? Number one will be to work closely with your Circus Producer and understand the alternatives. Remember entertainment is entertainment. Number two, this organization is putting together the Annual Meeting and Seminar Program as you are reading this article. Major issues of what to do without animals in our shows will be addressed and we anticipate some constructive alternatives will be discussed and some light will shine on the alternatives. Circus will still be a major source of income for our various Shrine Centers. However, we may have to broaden our offerings to the public in order to achieve our budgeted expenses. Certainly each and every Chairman will be challenged in this new world of entertainment we will be offering to our former customers. They may not understand why the changes are being made but if you provide entertainment they will respond in a positive manner. SCAFRA Annual Meeting and Seminar will be held in Bangor Maine, October 1, 2, 3,. Details will be coming out shortly. the Fund Raiser April, 2015 3

From the desk of the Secretary.. Ken D. McDougall, P.P., Secretary / Treasurer The 29th Annual Meeting and Seminar of SCANA/SCAFRA is now being shaped under the able guidance of our President Ralph Robshaw and his Director General Charlie Grindle. Bangor Maine will be the location and Anah Shriners will be our hosts. Illustrious Sir Jessie Thomas and first Lady Brenda of Anah Shriners, are looking forward to hosting the Annual meeting in their jurisdiction. Ills. Sir Jessie is a strong supporter of SCAFRA and will do all he can to make our time in Bangor as memorable as possible. Some wonder why we keep talking about membership and that we seem to spend a lot of time on this topic. The truth is that we are a volunteer group and we exist only to serve those who share our values and goals and the small membership fee opens the door to your Temple and not just to one fund raising project. SCAFRA is focused on Fund Raising not just on one aspect, such as a circus, but on ALL fund raising projects. I have personally attended 25 association meetings and in the early days I attended on my own, as my Temple is small and struggles with expenses. However, by implementing new processes and programs our Temple has 4 WEB SITE ***Under construction details shortly*** FACE BOOK Must be paid member to link in! delegates attending our seminars and they cover our province which is extremely large and far flung. Why do they do that? It is because we have benefitted beyond description. You could too, just open your mind and be prepared to grasp onto new projects and processes. I have found that there is always something new or at least a new way to look at our operations. What impresses me the most every year is the total commitment of the delegates to the job at hand, listening to speakers, comparing notes with others and above all sharing their knowledge. Each year you can hear of a fifty cent idea that you could turn into a dollar, all you need to do is pay attention and learn. Next edition of the Fund Raiser, will be out in late May with details on our seminar in October. Please share the Fund Raiser with others in your Temple. Bangor, Maine October 1-3 2015 the Fund Raiser April 2015 4
