Candidates are strngly recmmended t take the cre Surgery mdule Small Animal Surgical Practice (C-SAS.1) befre attempting this mdule. Whilst this mdule may be taken as a free-standing mdule, it assumes a sund understanding f the principles cvered within C-SAS.1 The syllabus is divided int sectins based n anatmical lcatin. A series f surgical prcedures is listed in each sectin. Candidates will be expected t becme familiar with the fllwing categries f infrmatin fr each surgical prcedure: Signalment, clinical signs, differential diagnsis Apprpriate investigative techniques Optins fr surgical management f the disease Anatmy, prcedures and techniques Special issues regarding theatre practice r aseptic technique Prgnsis and utcmes Cmplicatins SURGICAL PROCEDURES All surgical prcedures listed in the syllabus are categrised in terms f difficulty as A, B r C. The ratinale fr this is that there are clearly sme surgical prcedures that candidates studying fr the Certificate in Small Animal Practice wuld be expected t fully cmpetent (categry A). Other mre challenging prcedures are gruped in categry B which, by the time the full set f surgical mdules has been cmpleted, the candidate may be expected t perfrm cmpetently. Categry C prcedures are thse advanced techniques which are usually perfrmed by surgens with significant pst graduate training and experience, and candidates fr the CertSAP will nt be expected t demnstrate experience r cmpetence in these techniques. Hwever, candidates will be expected t understand an understanding f the full range f techniques in terms f indicatins, diagnsis, cmplicatins and prgnsis, sufficient t be able t advise referral where apprpriate. Learning Outcmes At the end f the mdule, candidates shuld be able t: 1. demnstrate a systematic understanding f the anatmical, physilgical, immunlgical and pathlgical prcesses invlved in specific surgical diseases, including the relatinships between the cnditin, surgical technique and the verall health status f the patient; 2. demnstrate a cmprehensive knwledge f the clinical presentatin f the cmmn surgical cnditins affecting dgs, cats and small mammals invlving the skin, aural, nasal, ral, airway and thracic regins; 3. demnstrate a cmprehensive understanding f apprpriate diagnstic prcedures applicable t surgery invlving the skin, aural, nasal, ral, airway and thracic regins; 4. demnstrate the ability t utilise a sund clinical reasning prcess and a critical awareness f current evidence based medicine, incrprating evidence frm the diagnstic database and scientific literature as well as the ability t apprpriately adapt t client, animal and practice factrs; 5. demnstrate a critical evaluatin f the scientific literature relating t their area f wrk; 6. demnstrate the ability t recgnise the apprpriate case fr nward referral. Mdule Structure The syllabus will be divided int 7 study units, each cntaining basic lecture and reading material supprted by weekly interactins in the frm f asynchrnus case based discussins, ther discussins and/r synchrnus jurnal clubs/literature critiques.

Study Unit 7 Onclgic Surgery A review f the principles f nclgic surgery, and staging f nclgic patients fllwed by the Categry B subject f skin tumurs; and the categry C subject f radical resectins. Assessment Strategy Prtfli f cases (20 case lg bk), 3 x detailed case reprts (1500 wrds), 1 x shrt answer questin and/r MCQ test at the end f the mdule and 1 x jurnal critique/jurnal club presentatin (pass/fail)
