CHARACTER WORD OF THE MONTH Detailed Descriptions AUGUST: EXCELLENCE Excellence is doing more than expected-the state of excelling. We have expectations for behavior. When a person exceeds those expectations, we say that he/she has achieved excellence. You can achieve excellence in a number of ways: * You can set goals for yourself and consistently work to achieve them. * Once you understand the expectations your parents and teachers have for you, you can consistently work to meet or exceed those expectations * You can consistently give your best effort in all that you do. * You can follow school and home rules, even when an adult isn t watching. * You can strive to be your best self, a person of character, a strong representative for home, school and community. SEPTEMBER: POSITIVE ATTITUDE With our attitudes and actions, we determine what our experiences will be like. There are many things YOU can do to improve your attitude. Make a list of people or things you are grateful for. Send a thank you note to a person who has made a positive difference in your life. Exercise or take a walk to clear your mind. Try on a smile and notice how good you feel. Recycle negative emotions into positive actions. Recycle frustration into determination to do your best work. It s hard to have a positive attitude if you lack motivation! OCTOBER: RESPONSIBILITY Being responsible means that we make good choices, even when no one is looking. We make good choices just because it is right and not because we will get credit or praise. Responsible people do their part. They show self-control. They think before they act or speak. They work hard and don t take credit for other people s work. Responsible people do their best and admit their own mistakes. Work to make responsible choices this month!

NOVEMBER: CITIZENSHIP We are all citizens citizens of our country, our community, and our schools. However, what does it mean to be a good citizen? How can you show others you devote yourself to the development of these different areas? You can be a good neighbor. Take care of where you live and be proud of what you have. Obey rules both in school and out of school! Find opportunities to take part in to make your community better. Protect the environment. Clean up and recycle. Demonstrate good sportsmanship and make others feel valued for their accomplishments. Stay positive. Everywhere we go, we have the opportunity to make a difference. Are you doing things that make others think about how you are making a positive difference? DECEMBER INTEGRITY A firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. Being honest, trustworthy, and incorruptible. Always doing the right thing even when no one else is watching. There is an old saying: "Honesty is the best policy." That means that the best way to live your life is to be truthful and fair. Integrity goes hand- in-hand with honesty. It means that people can count on you to do the right thing, even when no one is watching. JANUARY: RESPECT Be honest - If you do something wrong, admit it and apologize. Be positive Use kind words and positive body language. Don t embarrass, insult or make fun of others. Think before you speak. Be trusting Let others make choices and take responsibility. Be fair Listen to the other person s side of the story before reaching a conclusion. Be polite Use please, thank you, excuse me, pardon me, you re welcome. Use appropriate volume and tone in your voice. Be reliable Keep promises. Show people that you mean what you say.

Be a good listener Give people your full attention. Follow rules obey laws. *Keep from rolling your eyes, sighing, or complaining when your teacher announces a task. *Be caring *Show concern for people, animals and the environment. *Make the choice to not join in negative behavior. *Pay attention to personal hygiene; wash and comb your hair, brush your teeth, wash your face and body, wear clean clothing. *Accept the consequences of your behavior without complaints. *Be tolerant/accepting. Allow for the individuality of others and be accepting of individual differences. *Be a team player. Be available to help a classmate to get a job done if your teacher allows you to do so. *Be a good school, community, and American citizen. *Speak positively about our leaders. *Take positive action when possible. *Stand up when you notice injustice. FEBRUARY: CARING Caring is made up of two parts: a concern for others and a passion for an ideal, belief, or cause. Here are some ways you can show that you care: Show COMPASSION notice when others are uncomfortable or suffering and try to help. Show EMPATHY understand how others feel. Show CHARITY give more of your time, energy, and money to help others. Show MERCY forgive when others make mistakes. Show FORGIVENESS try to understand a wrong-doing, accept and move on. Show CONVICTION speak up when you believe something s wrong. believe. Show COMMITMENT be willing to pay the price and work hard for what you Show PERSISTENCE be determined not to give up! Show ENDURANCE follow through on your plans. MARCH: PERSEVERANCE Isn t it an awesome feeling when you go to work on something and it comes so easily that you get it done right away? It always feels good to accomplish something. However, have you ever started working on a project that is difficult and really challenges you? Sometimes when you are working on tasks like this, you may even find yourself becoming frustrated, annoyed, or maybe you think about giving up. However, if you stick to it and you keep working at it, often times, you will be able to complete the task and it feels even better when you finish. This is what perseverance looks like. It s not giving up when the going gets tough having true GRIT!

You will experience many situations in life where you are going to be really awesome at something. Still, there are definitely times where you will also find yourself feeling challenged. The difference lies in your reaction. Will you give up and walk away, never knowing if you could do it? Or do you stick with it, struggle through and become a victor in the end when you persevere to accomplish something you didn t know you were capable of? I challenge you this month to stay the path, work hard and don t give in on something that seems too difficult. Can you do it? Can you persevere? Of course you can just don t forget to push through to the end! APRIL: COURAGE We all encounter times when we are faced with scary circumstances but we do what is right, despite our fear. There are also moments when we are up against a difficult challenge, but we try it anyway. This is what we call COURAGE. Courage is standing up and doing something we think is right, even if it is hard to do. Courage can be seen in many different situations. It could be standing up for a friend who was getting bullied, helping someone in need, making a difficult decision, sticking up for what you believe or facing a personal fear. Being courageous and standing up for what is right is an important quality to have! It makes you a better person, a better student and a better citizen. This month, see if you can find a time to be courageous. Take a leap and face your fears to do what you know is right! All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them. Walt Disney MAY: TRUST What is TRUST? Trust is reliance on the integrity, strength and ability of a person or thing. Trust is confident expectation of something. Trust is belief. Trust is charge, custody or care. How can you be trustworthy? Do what you say you are going to do. Take care of items you borrow. Do what is expected of you. Allow others to take a turn or join in and trust in their abilities. Do your best work!
