UCLA Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Course and Hands-on Workshop COURSE DESCRIPTION The UCLA Department of Radiology, in collaboration with lead physicians from the departments of Sports Medicine and Rheumatology, is proud to offer a comprehensive interdisciplinary musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound hands-on learning experience. The MSK Ultrasound Course and Hands-On Workshop reviews the pertinent aspects of upper and lower extremity ultrasound critical for clinical application. This weekend course features, in addition to MSK ultrasound basics, up-to-date topics such as post-operative rotator cuff ultrasound, MSK ultrasound utility, MSK ultrasound procedures, and MSK ultrasound economics followed by panel discussions with audience participation. The course also features live split screen video demonstration of basic MSK sonographic technique essential for accurate clinical application. The interactive hands-on workshop provides ample opportunity for registrants to practice the techniques learned in lectures via small group training with subspecialists. The additional option of specialty training in the Cadaver Lab is ideal in providing real life, hands-on training of ultrasound-guided interventional technique that can expand the clinical scope of care for attendees. This hands-on practical day is taught by subspecialists who will demonstrate ultrasound-guided interventional techniques of the upper and lower extremity joints using cadavers. Note: Early registration for the optional cadaver lab is recommended, enrollment is limited to 24 participants. There is an additional fee for this workshop. TARGET AUDIENCE Those interested in performing MSK ultrasound in their practices, including, but not limited to, radiologists, sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists as well as sonographers, and resident and fellow trainees seeking to improve scanning techniques and understanding of MSK sonography. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of the course, attendees should be able to: Understand MSK anatomy pertinent to ultrasound Perform basic MSK ultrasound technique Identify the strengths and weaknesses of MSK ultrasound as an imaging modality Describe both the unique and complimentary roles of ultrasound examination Recognize transducer and required equipment selection Describe normal and abnormal findings on ultrasound of joints Recognize MSK ultrasound imaging pitfalls and artifacts Recognize dynamic properties of an MSK ultrasound examination Become familiar with the spectrum of MSK ultrasound-guided procedures CADAVER LAB WORKSHOP OPTION FOR ADVANCED PARTICIPANTS Full day of hands-on MSK interventions Small group training (4:1 instructor ratio) State-of-the-art lab facility at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA COURSE DIRECTOR Benjamin D.
