Walk MS: Indianapolis 2013 WE KEEP MOVING MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS STOPS PEOPLE FROM MOVING. THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETY EXISTS TO MAKE SURE IT DOESN T. At its most global level, movement is all around us, and whether physical or mental, we are always a part of it. Our bodies are in constant motion moving information from the brain to the body, but MS stops people from moving by attacking the myelin that protects normal nerve tissue. This damage keeps people from moving smoothly, both inside and out, so people living with multiple sclerosis know something about moving that many don t understand moving is not a guarantee. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society helps address the challenges of everyone affected by multiple sclerosis through a number of programs and services, helping individuals to stay connected and keep their lives moving forward. The Society also spends more money on MS research than any other multiple sclerosis organization in the world, pursuing all promising paths in MS research in an effort to stop the disease, restore what s been lost, and end MS forever. Walk MS generates funds to drive research for a cure and raise awareness about MS. More importantly, it serves as a rallying point for thousands of families, friends, colleagues, neighbors and loved ones to show their support for those living with the challenges of MS. Eight Walk MS events held throughout Indiana each year serve as an opportunity to come together as the movement to end multiple sclerosis. 1 Walk MS: 2014 Participant Guide

JOIN THE MOVEMENT & TEAM UP! DID YOU KNOW THAT 84 PERCENT OF WALK MS PARTICIPANTS JOIN THE MOVEMENT AS PART OF A TEAM? WHAT MAKES UP A TEAM? It only takes a few like-minded people to join together and form a team. Teams come in all shapes and sizes, anywhere from four to 600 people. WHY FORM A TEAM? Because joining the movement is more fun with others around! Plus, there is special recognition set aside just for teams. See these designations included under Team Spirit Awards in this guide. FORMING A TEAM IS EASY! Designate a team captain, make up a fun team name, and when you register online for Walk MS, choose the option to Start a Team. Already registered but want to start a team? No problem! Contact the Indiana State Chapter at 800-344-4867 or email us at indiana@nmss.org. GATHER AT YOUR TEAM AREA CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESS AT YOUR TEAM TENT OR TABLE! Depending on which Walk MS event you attend*, you can arrange to bring a team tent or designate a team table where you and your teammates can gather to celebrate your success. Use your team tent or table as a meeting place for people when they arrive at the Walk MS site, a home base for those on your team who may choose not to walk or to walk different routes and a central location to show off your team spirit. * The availability of team tents / tables varies depending on the Walk MS site. For more information about your Walk MS location, visit www.walkmsindiana.org. www.walkmsindiana.org 2

Walk MS: Wabash Valley 2013 MOVING TOGETHER RECRUITING Team members can be anybody friends, family, coworkers, or neighbors and they can all easily register as participants online at www.walkmsindiana.org. Whether you re a corporate team, a team of family and friends, or a combination of the two, just be sure to ask everyone you know. RAISING MONEY Fundraising comes more naturally when you make it personal. If your team is walking for someone with MS, ask them if they are willing to tell their story. Be sure to follow that with a statement about how much progress we ve made in treating the disease. We make this simple and easy! Keep reading to learn how. HAVE FUN Being part of a Walk MS team is an opportunity to share a great experience with friends and family members, or coworkers. Be sure to remind your fellow teammates of why they registered and the difference that they are making in the lives of thousands of Hoosiers living with multiple sclerosis. Walk MS is much more than a fundraising event it s a joyous celebration of how far we ve come together! 3 Walk MS: 2014 Participant Guide

TEAM SPIRIT AWARDS SHOW OFF THAT TEAM SPIRIT! SPECIAL AWARDS ARE GIVEN AT EACH WALK MS EVENT FOR THOSE TEAMS THAT PROUDLY SHOW OFF THEIR WALK MS PRIDE. An award is given in each of these three categories: best team sign, best team t-shirt and best overall team theme. Even if you re not participating as a part of a team, you can still flaunt your style. Orange is the color of our movement make the most of it! Beads, feather boas and funny hats are welcome, but please make sure all attire is respectful and family-friendly. DON T OVERLOOK THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT IN FUNDRAISING...ASK EVERYONE! Ninety percent of people will give something when asked personally. The following guide breaks the art of fundraising down into 10 steps that will move you closer to your goal and all of us toward a world free of MS. 1. LOG INTO YOUR PARTICIPANT CENTER Visit our website at www.walkmsindiana.org. At the top of the page, enter the username and password you created during registration. Keep in mind that if you registered with an email address, your username and password were sent to you, but you can request this information by clicking on Forgot your Password? From here you can develop your own website, send emails asking for donations, track your progress and much more! Be sure to visit our website for the Participant Center 5 Walk MS: 2014 Participant Guide

Walk MS: South Central 2013 How-to Guide and video (located under the fundraising tab). You can also contact the Chapter (see the last page of this guide) to have a hard copy mailed to you. 2. UPDATE YOUR PERSONAL WEBPAGE From your Participant Center, click on the Personal Page tab. On this page, you can select the layout, color scheme and content for your personal fundraising page. Your donors will be directed to this page to make their online donations. When making changes, be sure to save often! Click Refresh Preview to see what your page will look like. You can upload photos, videos, and write your own personal story. MAKE IT PERSONAL. WHEN YOU TELL OTHERS WHY YOU ARE INVOLVED IN WALK MS, YOU MOTIVATE THEM TO PARTICIPATE BY DONATING, VOLUNTEERING OR EVEN REGISTERING FOR THE EVENT THEMSELVES. SHARE YOUR HOPE! 3. SET A GOAL As you update your personal fundraising page, it s important to set a goal not only for yourself, but also your donors. Think of a goal that is realistic, yet challenging. If you re new to Walk MS, set your goal to beat the average approximately $130 per person in 2013. If you participated last year, we recommend that you increase your goal by 30 percent. Remember that you must raise at least $100 to earn an official Walk MS t-shirt. www.walkmsindiana.org 6

4. CREATE A CONTACT LIST You have a goal, and now you need to meet (or beat) it! The key to building a successful fundraising campaign depends on asking the people you know for support. Use your holiday card list or import your email list directly into your Participant Center. Once logged in, click the Address Book and click Import Contacts. You can import from Outlook, Yahoo, AOL and more! Trying to think of all the people you know can be overwhelming, so take a look at the list below for help. THINK ABOUT ALL THE PEOPLE WHOSE LIVES YOU TOUCH AND ASK THEM TO SUPPORT YOUR EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETY. UTILIZE THIS CHECKLIST TO HELP YOU IDENTIFY PEOPLE YOU KNOW. START WITH THE PEOPLE EASIEST TO REACH YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. NEXT, ASK ACQUAINTANCES AND SERVICE PROVIDERS. YOU LL MEET YOUR FUNDRAISING GOAL BEFORE YOU KNOW IT! Family Members Friends Neighbors Your Company High School / College Alumni Community / Social Clubs Child s School Colleagues / Clients Place of Worship Fraternity / Sorority Service Providers (i.e. Barber, Dentist, etc.) Child s Sports Teams / Activity Groups Social Networking Walk MS: Northwest 2013 7 Walk MS: 2014 Participant Guide

5. START FUNDRAISING Once you ve built your contact list, it s time to reach out and ask for donations. You can do this by sending an email, a letter or asking face-to-face. No matter how you choose to approach your contacts, it s best to develop a key message of what you want to say. Include information about why you chose to become involved in Walk MS, what your fundraising goal is and information about the National MS Society. Don t forget to mention that donations are tax-deductible! One of the easiest ways to start your fundraising is to use your Participant Center to email your contacts. Log in and click Email to select from templates or create your own message. Each email you send will include a link to your personal page where contacts can make a secure donation online. Walk MS: Northeast 2013 Need help composing your email? Check out the sample fundraising letter / email included under Fundraising Ideas at www.walkmsindiana.org. Remember, whether you email, write a letter or make a personal phone call to solicit donations, don t be afraid to ask for a specific amount or a minimum donation. And remember, don t talk yourself out of asking. Let people make their own decisions about giving. SOME COMPANIES MATCH THEIR EMPLOYEES CHARITABLE GIFTS OR FUNDRAISING PROCEEDS. ASK AT WORK IF YOUR COMPANY HAS A MATCHING CONTRIBUTION PLAN, AND THEN FOLLOW THEIR PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING THE MATCH. YOU CAN ALSO CLICK THE FUNDRAISING IDEAS TAB AT WWW.WALKMSINDIANA.ORG FOR A SEARCHABLE GUIDE TO EMPLOYER MATCHING GIFTS. KNOW OF A COMPANY INTERESTED IN BECOMING A SPONSOR OF WALK MS INDIANA? CONTACT US! SEE INFORMATION AT THE END OF THIS GUIDE. www.walkmsindiana.org 8

6. CONSIDER ADDITIONAL FUNDRAISING STRATEGIES For many Walk MS participants, writing letters or emails has proven to be the easiest and most effective way to fundraise. However, many participants have been successful with additional methods. Visit www.walkmsindiana.org and click the Fundraising tab for a list of additional fundraising strategies and resources. 7. RECORD YOUR DONATIONS AND TURN THEM IN As the dollars start to roll in, be sure to record your donations either on the Donor Tracking Form available online under Fundraising or by clicking on the My Progress button in your Participant Center. Your online donations will already be listed there, but you can add any offline donations you receive by clicking on Enter Gifts Received Offline. We encourage you to turn in money prior to the Walk. The Indiana State Chapter Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can also send donations in by mail to the address listed on the last page of this guide. Don t forget to have donors make checks payable to the National MS Society and to put your name in the memo line of checks before turning them in! Did you know that you have 30 days after the Walk to qualify for prizes? Keep fundraising! Simply mail in any donations collected after the event. 8. FOLLOW UP To really boost your fundraising, make a follow-up call or send an email at least a week after your original ask. Most of your contacts will want to give, but will get busy and forget. Send a follow-up email to remind them! Depending on how early you sent your fundraising letters, you may need to follow up more than once! 9. SEND THANK YOU NOTES Once you receive a donation, it s important to acknowledge the generosity of the donor and the impact that they have made on the lives of those affected by MS. Whether it s a phone call, a hand-written note or an email, your donor will appreciate the gesture. Individuals who donate to your personal page online will receive an email receipt for tax purposes. Any documented cash or check donation of $50 or more will receive 9 Walk MS: 2014 Participant Guide

Walk MS: River Valley 2013 a letter from the Chapter that serves as a receipt. For cash gifts less than $50, you can order a pad of receipts from the Chapter using the Materials Order Form located under the Fundraising tab at www.walkmsindiana.org. 10. WALK TO CREATE A WORLD FREE OF MS The last step is the easiest! You ve spent weeks preparing for the Walk, now it s time to get out and do it! The National Multiple Sclerosis Society s Walk MS events serves as a rallying point for thousands of people living with MS and their loved ones. Whether you walk because you have MS or because you care about someone who does, thank you for joining the movement. Together, we are moving closer to a world free of multiple sclerosis. Be sure to check out the Commonly Asked Questions section of this guide for more information about the day-of Walk MS experience. You ll also receive a Final Details mailer a few days before your Walk MS event with additional information. SOCIAL MEDIA & FUNDRAISING Social media can make fundraising simple and fun. Use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn to spread the word about your participation in Walk MS and ask your friends to support you. Visit www.walkmsindiana.org and click the Fundraising tab for resources on using social media for Walk MS. In addition, once you register, you ll also receive emails about how to fundraise through Facebook. www.walkmsindiana.org 10

Walk MS: Michiana 2013 Walk MS: East Central 2012 COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO WALK MS Once you register for Walk MS, you will be mailed a participant toolkit that includes a contribution envelop. Complete this envelope and bring it with you the day of the walk with the contributions you ve collected. This envelope also serves as your waiver, so please hold on to it. Don t have an envelope? There will extras be available on-site at Walk MS. HOW DO I TURN IN CONTRIBUTIONS? It is recommended that you turn in your contributions as soon as possible. The faster you turn in your contributions, the faster the National MS Society can begin putting those dollars to good use. Don t hold on to checks! Mail them in or drop by the Chapter office! Please make sure that all checks are made out to the National MS Society and that your name or team name is in the memo line. Online contributions are automatically credited to your account. Include remaining contributions in your contribution envelope and bring it with you to Walk MS. This envelope is also your waiver. 11 Walk MS: 2014 Participant Guide

WHAT IF THERE IS INCLEMENT WEATHER? Rain, snow or shine, Walk MS will go on! (Except in cases of extreme weather, in which you should check your email or our Facebook page for cancellation information.) There is no rain date for Walk MS, so please dress accordingly. DO I NEED TO RAISE MONEY? ISN T MY ATTENDANCE ENOUGH SUPPORT? There is no registration fee to participate in Walk MS, so we encourage individuals to fundraise. Walk MS is the signature fundraising event for the Society, generating important revenue to fund cutting-edge research and life-changing programs and services for Hoosiers with MS and their families. HOW WILL THE SOCIETY KNOW HOW MUCH I HAVE IN ONLINE CONTRIBUTIONS? Online contributions are automatically credited to your account. Because most prizes are sent after the event, there is no real need to have an exact total the morning of the walk. However, Society staff members will have a report that indicates your online total as of the night before for the purposes of distributing t-shirts. WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY PRIZE(S)? Participants must raise $100 to receive a Walk MS t-shirt. These will be available at the event. As participants are eligible for prizes up to 30 days following the event, prize forms will be sent eight to 12 weeks after the event. WHAT IF I M UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE WALK? Walking is optional at all Walk MS events. We want everyone to be a part of our Movement, regardless of ability level. If you re unable to complete the route, you re welcome to remain at the Start / Finish area for the entire duration of the event. For some participants, the Walk MS route may be a challenge. Each Walk MS event offers different route lengths to choose from, with rest stops throughout each route. Walk MS routes are also accessible. WHO DO I GET IN TOUCH WITH IF I NEED HELP? At the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, we want you to have the best Walk MS experience possible. See the next page for contact information. We re here for you! www.walkmsindiana.org 12
