Diabetes Educator Conference 2018 Description This conference will enable the participant to improve their clinical practice knowledge related to the care of people with diabetes. Program topics include: Mediterranean diet and dietary guidelines; diabetes medications update; diabetes and Atherosclerotic Peripheral Arterial Disease (APAD); gastric obesity surgery and diabetes; and technology updates. Target Audience This conference is designed for diabetes educators, registered nurses and dietitians. All other health care professionals interested in the care of people with diabetes are welcome. Objectives Should my patients go Mediterranean? Describe an Americanized version of the Mediterranean eating plan Understand the benefits and barriers to following this type of eating plan Compare and contrast the DASH and Mediterranean eating plans for people with Type 2 diabetes Gastric Obesity Surgery and Diabetes Describe the indications for metabolic surgery Understand the differences in the various operations and their outcomes Recognize the early and late complications of the operations Discuss potential explanations for the metabolic effects of the surgery Pumps, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM), and Artificial Pancreas Where are we with the Technology? Describe how an insulin pump and/or continuous glucose monitor works List the currently available insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitor systems Discuss the differences between the currently available systems along with pros and cons of each Atherosclerotic Peripheral Arterial Disease (APAD); More than just Blocked Arteries in the Leg Examine APAD as a manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis and the need for maximal risk factor treatment, just like Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease Communicate the increasing role of atherosclerotic risk factor management and exercise therapy for patients with lower extremity claudication Medication Update Discuss the two newest classes of diabetes medication, SGLT-2 inhibitors and GLP 1 analogs Describe the advantages of basal bolus insulin Review the pharmacokinetics of insulin degludec and compare to other basal insulins

The fee for registrations received prior to February 23, 2018 is $75.00 and includes breaks, lunch and credit. Registration fee after February 23, 2018 is $90.00.
