Over a 12-week period, a range of activities will take place across Greater Manchester aimed at seeking the views of people on a series of options for significant changes to health and care across the county. Healthier Together - Public listening event, Tuesday 19 August 2014 Healthier Together is a review of health and care in Greater Manchester. This includes primary, community and hospital services and the impact on social care The Healthier Together programme aims to develop a model of care that will help the NHS and other care providers in Greater Manchester provide quality services that are safe, accessible and sustainable for future generations. It will consider how best to provide the right service, at the right time, in the right place to achieve the best outcomes within the resources available. A 12- week formal public consultation was launched on 7 July and Salford residents are invited to attend a public listening event to find out more and share your views. A first for Salford - Langworthy and Ordsall Neighbourhood Patient Participation Group Patient members and practice managers from Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) across Langworthy and Ordsall came together for the first neighbourhood PPG meeting on 3 July at Langworthy Medical Centre. PPGs commonly work with GP practices to offer the patient perspective on services provided. The neighbourhood meetings will offer PPGs the opportunity to work closer together, sharing experiences and learning. The neighbourhood PPG will also help to review the quality and value of services commissioned by Salford CCG. Barbara Slater, Assistant Practice Manager at Langworthy Medical Practice, said of the meeting: I felt positive after the meeting, it was good to hear that the problems we face are similar to everyone else and that there is a willingness around the table for patients and practices to work together to resolve issues. The next Langworthy and Ordsall neighbourhood PPG will take place on Thursday 2 October 2014, Langworthy Medical Centre, 2.00pm 3.00pm. Volunteers help shape long-term conditions services in Salford Tackling long-term conditions, such as diabetes and asthma is a key strategic objective for Salford CCG. The Long-Term Conditions (LTC) Commissioning Group commissions (buys) services to deliver care and treatment for those patients with one or more LTC, whether this is in primary, community or secondary care. Members of the Citizens and Patients Panel with an interest in LTCs were invited to take part in a mock LTC Group meeting. From this meeting three volunteers were selected to take on the role of patient representatives. It is envisaged that the patient representatives will be a great asset to the group by providing a patient s view, contributing and participating in shaping the future of health service provision in Salford. Andrew Mackey is one of the patient representatives. He said: It is great that that the CCG is putting the voice of patients at the heart of commissioning decisions when it comes to long-term conditions services. Harry Golby, Head of Service Improvement at the CCG, said: The CCG is committed to ensuring that the views and voices of patients are heard at the highest levels of commissioning. By appointing three patient representatives to the Long-Term Conditions Commissioning Group, we are demonstrating this commitment and I look forward to seeing more patient involvement as we move forward as an organisation. Salford CCG staff support local organisations Members of staff from Salford CCG recently volunteered at four community projects and organisations in Salford, supporting local people. Emmaus, an organisation which works with homeless people, Ordsall Community Arts, Princes Park Garden Centre managed by Salford Disability Forum and St Ann s Hospice in Little Hulton all benefitted. Volunteers from Salford CCG got an insight into the work they do and had the opportunity to give something back to the communities that we serve. 4 salccg.involve@nhs.net One staff member who volunteered at Ordsall Community Arts, said: I spoke to local volunteers about the health challenges they face and I got to understand a little more about the difficulties they have that impact on their health. I learnt more about Salford and gained a little more understanding about the massive impact the voluntary sector has and can have on health in local communities. The Salford Standard Over the next five years, Salford CCG aims to redefine core programmes and recognise quality as a priority in the delivery of all services on offer to the people of Salford. In order to deliver this work, there will be investment and focus on the development of primary care general practice. We want to ensure that when the people of Salford use their primary care services they all receive the same safe standards and that the highest standards of cleanliness, quality and clinical effectiveness are experienced throughout. To achieve this, the CCG aims to work to the Salford Standard of care. We ve worked closely with GPs and Primary Care staff to develop a Practice Quality Dashboard. This tool will provide a broad view on the quality of general practices in Salford, and it will draw on a wide variety of clinical information, patient experience feedback, and safety information in order for GP practices to be able to identify areas of improvement. A draft copy of the dashboard was shown to 120 GPs and Primary Care staff at our recent Strategic Event and the feedback will contribute to further development. The final Practice Quality Dashboard will then launch in September. Dr Jeremy Tankel, Clinical Lead for Quality and Safety, said: The quality of care provided by General Practices in Salford is already high. Improving this even further despite years of increasing workload and pressure is a challenge for all concerned, one that the CCG looks forward to supporting with its innovative programme. Meet Salford s Mental Health Lead Dr Tom Tasker Salford CCG has a team of GPs who represent the different neighbourhoods and our work streams. Their role is to make sure that the voice of the community is fed back to the CCG when any decision is being made and to share CCG information with practices and patients. In each edition of Shaping Health Your Choice, Your Voice, we will introduce a different GP. This edition sees us turn our attention to Dr Tom Tasker, GP at St Andrew s Medical Centre in Eccles and the CCG s Clinical Lead for Mental Health. What do you enjoy about your job? Mental health problems can have a huge impact on your quality of life. As a GP, helping someone overcome their illness and start enjoying life is extremely rewarding. I am also passionate about improving mental health services in Salford and have been involved in developing a new primary care mental health service and the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme, which makes talking therapies more widely available in Salford. What do you like about working in Salford? Salfordians are steadfastly resolute, resilient and always appreciative if you go that extra mile to help them. Plus we are lucky to have a really good group of people in Salford trying their hardest to improve the quality of services we deliver. What are Salford s top mental health issues? Mental health problems are unfortunately very common in Salford, especially depression and anxiety. By increasing investment in talking therapies, we are giving people real choice about the types of treatment they can receive for depression and anxiety. I have also overseen significant new investment in memory services and liaison (hospital-based psychiatry) services. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I love spending time with my family, which takes up a fair amount of my weekends. I m sports mad, previously playing but now more as supporter - although I try to keep fit by doing regular 10ks and still manage to hack a golf ball around 18 holes. I enjoy the theatre (musicals being my guilty pleasure), along with travelling and gardening. 6 5

Will be running a series of workshops in September and October to develop community reporters. The reporters will then be able to gather stories from their peers informally, recording the conversations on film, audio and in writing. Patient Experience/Engagement You said... We... Not all GP practices have an established Patient Participation Group. Are supporting individual practices to establish a PPG, providing a toolkit to practice managers. Have facilitated the first neighbourhood PPG, to help share learning and experiences. Read more about this on Page 4. Access to Primary Care GP Appointments You said... We... You wanted the patient voice to contribute more to the decision-making process in the CCG. Now have three volunteers shaping the long term condition service in Salford. Read more about this on page 4. Invited panel members to contribute to the Patient/Practice contract. The contract will help patients with a long-term condition manage their illness better. Citizens and Patient Panel 6 You said... We... Patients should be involved in assessing the CCG s equality and diversity performance. Invited patients and groups representing members of protected characteristics to contribute to the annual equality public grading at the CCG. More information is available on page 7. Young people need to be consulted more widely on health matters. Worked with Salford Royal to create a Youth Health Ambassadors group which will help bring a young person s perspective to the CCG and hospital. Patients and carers should be more involved in the development of end of life care services. Salford communities grade Salford CCG s equality performance NHS England requires CCGs to implement an equality performance framework known as Equality Delivery System 2 (EDS2), which helps ensure that organisations, like Salford CCG, are doing enough to cater for the needs of people who have protected characteristics. At Salford CCG, we successfully completed our 2014 EDS2 training and annual public grading events on 5 and 16 June. Members of Protected Characteristic Groups graded evidence provided by the CCG on inclusive leadership in 2013/14. An annual public report and public grading dashboard will shortly appear on the CCG website under our Equality and Diversity section. However, in the interim, we can report that the stakeholder group graded Salford CCG as being in the developing to achieving category. The full report will contain detailed analysis of the scores and will be available shortly. Salford CCG is now in the process of gathering evidence for the next annual public grading in 2015, which will consider 2014/15 performance on Better Health Outcomes. The evidence will answer the question: How do local protected groups fare compared with people in general in relation to healthcare services? The event was well attended by local stakeholders who took part in workshop activities to identify the priorities for maternity and early years services in Salford. The information gathered from this event, together with the online questionnaire, will inform the service moving forward.
