Higher National Unit specification: support notes This part of the Unit specification is offered as guidance. The support notes are not mandatory. While the exact time allocated to this Unit is at the discretion of the centre, the notional design length is 80 hours. Guidance on the content and context for this Unit This Unit is primarily intended for those candidates who wish to work within the media and theatre industry, although it may also be relevant to those candidates who wish to achieve an HND in Makeup Artistry. Outcome (1) looks at the underpinning knowledge required to identify the various types of postiche. Essentially the candidate should be able to identify synthetic full hard front postiche and real hair lace front full postiche; the candidate will be able to accurately carry out the padding up of a malleable block process ensuring the postiche fits properly. Finally, the candidate will demonstrate the blocking up process of both lace front real hair postiche and hard front synthetic hair postiche. Outcome (2) provides the candidate with the knowledge and skill to research and plan a variation of hairstyles suitable for the range of postiche stated within the Evidence Requirements of this Outcome. The candidate will choose appropriate equipment that would be required to prepare, and demonstrate the appropriate blocking and setting and styling techniques suitable for this range of postiche. Outcome (3) provides the candidate with the knowledge and skill to demonstrate preparation of models/client with various hair lengths prior to fitting them with, lace front human hair full postiche and hard front synthetic full postiche. Candidate will also demonstrate the correct procedure for the fitting of, removal and aftercare relevant to this range of postiche. Outcome (4) provides the candidate with knowledge and skill required to demonstrate the correct procedures to effectively carry out the fitting, securing, removing and maintenance care for facial postiche. Guidance on the delivery and assessment of this Unit This Unit is likely to form part of a Group Award, which will primarily be designed to provide candidates with the technical or professional knowledge and skills related to media and theatrical occupations. The delivery sequence of this Unit will be at the discretion of the each centre and should be in relation to other Units contained within the Group Award being delivered, although it can be delivered as a freestanding Unit. HN Unit (F0JD 34): Make-up Artistry: Maintenance and Styling of Postiche 7

Higher National Unit specification: support notes (cont) Opportunities for developing Core Skills There are opportunities to develop the Core Skill of Problem Solving (planning and organising), at SCQF level 5 although there is no automatic certification of Core Skills or Core Skills components. The delivery and assessment of this Unit may contribute towards the component planning and organising of the Core Skill Problem Solving at SCQF level 5 because of the requirements to research and produce postiche. The general skill for this component is plan, organise and complete a task. Open learning Although the theoretical aspects could be studied through Open Learning, the level of practical competencies required would create difficulties in the delivery and assessment of this Unit. Candidates with disabilities and/or additional support needs The additional support needs of individual candidates should be taken into account when planning learning experiences, selecting assessment instruments or considering alternative Outcomes for Units. For information on these, please refer to the SQA document Guidance on Alternative Assessment Arrangements for Candidates with Disabilities and/or Additional Support Needs, which is available on SQA s website: www.sqa.org.uk.
