TASK 1 MULTIPLE CHOICE. You are going to read a magazine article about the Edinburgh Festival. For questions 1-5, choose the most appropriate answer A, B or C, which fits best according to the text. The exercise begins with an example. FRIEDA KAHLO Each week we ask one of our guests to tell us what famous character they would like to meet and why. Our guest here tells us about the famous painter Frieda Kahlo. It all started when a friend and I went to the cinema and saw a wonderful film called Frieda. That was the first time I heard about this famous woman. The main character, Frieda, is played by Salma Hayek. An incredible performance. That film got me so interested in that painter that I got back home and did some research on the internet. Frieda Kahlo, the painter, was Mexican. She was born at the beginning of the century and she died in the 1950s. When she was nineteen she was in a horrible bus accident. She had terrible injuries, so she had to have a lot of operations, and she was in bed for a long time. She liked painting, so her mother bought a mirror and put it over her bed. So she started painting pictures of herself self portraits. And she never stopped painting after that. Some people think that her pictures are a bit strange and that they wouldn t like to have one in their living room. But I personally love them. Many people think that she was a surrealist, like Salvador Dali, that she painted dreams; but that isn t true. She painted her life; all the things that happened to her. And her life was a bit strange, or let s say unusual, so the pictures are unusual too. They re her life; her paintings tell her story. Because of the accident she couldn t have children and you see that in her pictures too. I love her. Madonna collects her paintings. She once said that she couldn t be friends with anyone who doesn t like Frieda Kahlo. The painter is incredibly famous now. One of her paintings, Roots I think it was, was sold in 2006 for five and a half million dollars. Adapted from an article about Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera
