Do something you enjoy! Meet new people Make a difference! Enhance your CV Build your confidence! Gain new skills Welcome to Abbey Community Centre! As one of over 145 volunteers at the centre, I am delighted that you are considering coming to join us. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the centre; without us, so many of our activities would not happen. From our now annual pantomime, transforming waste ground into the centre's beautiful and tranquil garden, visiting isolated people at home, organising outings, teaching bridge and more, our volunteers contribute their time, skills and ideas to Abbey. Our dedicated staff team takes the recruiting and retaining of volunteers very seriously. They provide the structure to support all our volunteers, ensuring not only that we are useful but that we enjoy our voluntary work as well. Abbey works with the whole community and welcomes volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. I am immensely proud to be the Chair of this vibrant centre and after reading our application pack, I hope you feel inspired to join us. Best wishes Diana Young Chair of Trustees The Centre The Abbey Community Centre is a vibrant, multicultural meeting place that provides a safe environment and a warm welcome to its users. The centre exists to improve the quality of life for local people, offering excellent services which provide a range of educational, recreational, cultural and social opportunities. It is a place people from a wide range of backgrounds & cultures have come to meet, learn and enjoy for over 40 years. 2 P a g e

What would I be doing? The centre is a charity and relies upon the vital contribution of the 145 fabulous volunteers that help the staff team, giving an average of 200 hours of their time per week. Anyone can volunteer-it doesn t matter what your experience or background is, or how much time you can offer, we will find a role that fits you. For example, you could be the first point of contact for visitors on reception, welcoming them to the centre and providing useful information; developing your customer service skills and helping with admin duties. Volunteer in our crèche or soft play drop ins, help over 50s unravel the mysteries of the modern age with your IT skills, providing life changing guidance with phones and computers. Share your love of social media, help promote and record activities; improving your design, marketing and journalism skills. We need people to organize trips to exciting places for lonely and isolated people and help create an oasis of calm in our urban garden-we will match you to your passion, treat you with respect, support you fully and have fun! Volunteering is incredibly rewarding, allows you to try new things, contribute and changes people s lives! Here s some stories from our recent volunteers Marta: It was such a pleasure to be a part of Abbey Community Centre Reception. I had a great time in here. I have learnt plenty of the principals of well-managed reception. Thanks to you and your excellent training! I am very grateful for the opportunity to volunteer here at the ACC. Meeting such great people with passion for helping the others was the best experience in my life, sincerely, Marta. 3 P a g e

Teresa and Josephine have been taking part in the Kilburn Good Neighbours, scheme for a whopping seven years and show no signs of stopping any time soon! In some ways, they are a typical Kilburn Good Neighbours, pairing meeting every week for a chat, scrabble and all important cup of tea, however, as Teresa tells us, every person gets something different out of the scheme. Maurice comes to the centre almost every day and is an invaluable help. He attends several of the activities at Abbey as well as turning his hand to all kinds of tasks, from gardening to repairs and sweeping up. He always has time to help and usually a good joke to go with it! Dora: I really enjoy working as a receptionist volunteer at Abbey Community Centre. It has given me the opportunity of getting to know a different type of work environment. Volunteering as a receptionist has helped me to develop my skills and has given me the chance to gain experience. 4 P a g e

Judith: Volunteering helps me structure my week! Judith came to an event at the Abbey Community Centre to learn about the redevelopment of the area. Whilst there, she discovered the over 50 s time bank scheme where she could share her own skills with others and learn from theirs. She then decided to help out at the IT Drop-In s for the over 50 s, helping those in need of assistance and training with computers and the internet. Once I became a volunteer, I was able to redirect my energy and developed a sense of belonging and contributing to the community. The reasons people volunteer are many, including learning new skills, trying new things-which can enhance your employability; meeting new people, building their confidence or just helping others! We will make sure that you are valued and treated with respect, supported by our staff team and enjoy your time with us. 11 P a g e

What will I get out of volunteering? You can learn new, and develop existing skills, whilst getting valuable work experience. Volunteering is also a fun way to make friends, meet people and make a difference to people s lives and also shows you are motivated, positive and proactive to prospective employers. You will be part of a great team and make a difference to people s lives in the community. What skills do I need? This will depend on what role you decide upon, but often, enthusiasm, a friendly smile and a positive attitude are the most valuable skills, but we will discuss specific requirements with you when you apply. Who can volunteer? Depending on your circumstances anyone aged over 18 can volunteer with us. How much time do I have to give as a volunteer? We have a variety of roles-some need regular hours, whilst others can be once in a while; we will discuss this with you thoroughly when you apply and fit around your availability. Can I recoup my costs? Volunteers should not be out of pocket from helping us, so we will reimburse reasonable agreed expenses, such as bus fares.
