Bringing Out the Leader in You George Koenig President NCEMSF

What is leadership? Leadership is a way of influencing people beyond routine compliance with directions and orders. Leadership is an act that causes others to act or respond in a shared direction and bring about positive changes. Leadership is the key dynamic force that motivates and coordinates an organization to accomplish its objectives. Leadership is the ability to inspire confidence and support among the people who are needed to attain organizational goals.

Are leaders born or are leaders made? We must learn through the development of characteristics. When do we start becoming leaders? Childhood We become exposed to values and traits of leadership. We will be influenced by considering what purpose or values may lies beyond our personal advancement or goals. This evolution continues as adults.

Behaviors Attitude Values

Character It is more than just talk. Talent is a gift, character is a choice. It bring lasting success with people. Leaders cannot rise about the limitations of their character.

Character The lack of character leads to the 4 A s of destruction, when success is achieved. Arrogance Aloneness Adventure seeking that is destructive Adultery

Character Can we improve our character? Yes, with conscious and conscientious thought and action Search for flaws in your character Look for patterns in your behavior Face the music If you have shortchanged someone, apologize to him or her. Rebuild

Sacrifice and Servant Leadership What does leadership require of us? Requires on going sacrifice Leadership is more than projects and longer hours.

Leadership Responsibilities High Rights Low

The higher that you go the more you must sacrifice. For everything that you gain you loose something.

Things to avoid Failure to sacrifice like before Complacency Success requires change, implementation, and sacrifice.

Servant Leadership Serve customers Serve industry Serve community Serve followers You must help others reach their goals, in order for them to help you reach yours.

To improve servanthood: Perform small acts of kindness Learn to walk slowly through the crowd Move into action

Creating a Legacy As a leader you are responsible for passing leadership on to your successor. Leaders also leave a legacy of succession Leads the organization with a long view Creates a leadership culture Pay price today to ensure success tomorrow Value team leadership above individual leadership Walk away from the organization with integrity

Empowerment vs. Entrapment The organization must empower its people or be prepared to rescue them.

Definition Empower to give power or authorize

Things that empower: Clearly written mission statement Job description SOP or SOG Discipline procedure Effective training

Things that entrap: Lack of things that empower or misuse of them Lack of or uneven enforcement of rules Misunderstandings Misperceptions

Human Behavior Model How do we differ? Physical Mental Social Personality impactors: Perception Expectations Aspirations

Maslow s needs: Biological Those needs necessary for life support Security Those needs that protect and ensure continuity of biological needs Social Those needs of attention and belonging

Maslow s needs: Self-esteem Those needs of recognition, status, and achievement Self-realization needs Those needs of opportunity to self actuate

Communication Model Defense mode Talking down She, he, they, you Problem solving Let s, Us, We Seeking recognition Talking up Manipulative, excuses, backing down, bragging I, Me

How to empower others? Tell people what is expected of them. Make sure they know how to do it. Provide them the time, space, and authority to do it. Let them know that their input is important and that they have control over their participation Provide them timely feedback objectively and honestly

Effective leadership should: Make people feel strong, help them feel that they can influence their environment. Build trust in the leader. Officers should be open, and honest, and forthright Make sure members know how to do the task before designating duties Structure co-operation rather than competition

Empower or Rescue You must decide to be proactive or reactive Training is a proactive function Leadership is a verb not a noun It is a set of behaviors to bring about results. Be proactive

Reflections My notions are based on chosen values not upon my moods, feelings, or circumstances. Provide results instead of blame, eliminate the if only cycle. Begin with the end in mind. My written personal mission provides meaning and purpose to my life.
