PRESENT APPOINTMENTS: Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon Professor of Simulation in Surgery Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Nicolson Street Edinburgh EH8 9DW CLINICAL INTERESTS I was appointed to the (then) North Manchester Healthcare NHS Trust twenty-three years ago with the specific responsibility of establishing a surgical oncology service for patients with orofacial and salivary malignancy. From a relatively small base in 1994, this area of clinical activity has developed substantially and had allowed me to gain extensive experience in the management of patients suffering from head and neck malignant disease. Secondary to this, I have developed a specialised service for the management of surgical dermatological problems and so have considerable experience in the treatment of skin cancers, particularly around the head and neck. The maxillofacial service provides treatment for the full range of oral and maxillofacial conditions, including the surgical removal of buried, retained and impacted teeth, surgical management of periapical disease, the placement of dental implants for the retention of dental and oro-facial prostheses and the treatment of trauma and malignant disease. Both hospitals at which I work have a substantial throughput of oral and maxillofacial trauma and I am regularly engaged in the treatment of the full range of these injuries, from fractured teeth to complex multiple fractures of the skull and facial bones, together with the concomitant injuries to the facial soft tissues. My academic research has been concentrated on the interface between the clinical presentation and microscopic findings in oral cancer, attempting to identify markers of malignant disease which may aid in diagnosis, treatment and in improving outcomes. I have undertaken training as a medico-legal expert with Bond Solon and in conjunction with the Faculty of Law of the University of Wales. I have undertaken the required training and qualified as a CAA Aviation Medical Examiner 3
