YOU ARE INVITED TO QUIT USING TOBACCO AND NICOTINE PRODUCTS FOR YOU & YOUR BABY! QUIT FOR YOU. QUIT FOR YOUR BABY. Quit smoking guide for pregnant woman

WILLING TO QUIT You CAN Quit Smoking. NOW is a Good Time to Quit. GOOD REASONS TO QUIT FOR YOU Feel good about what you have done for yourself and your family. Have clothes, hair and a home that smell better. Have more energy and breathe easier. Find your food tastes better. More likely to live long enough to know your grandchildren. GOOD REASONS TO QUIT FOR YOUR BABY Your baby will more likely: Be healthier. Be born closer to the due date. Get fewer colds and ear infections. Cough and cry less. After you quit, your health will start to improve right away 20 MINUTES: Heart rate drops. 8-12 HOURS: Blood oxygen levels increase to normal. 1 DAY: Chance of heart attack decreases. 2 DAYS: Senses of taste and smell improve. 2 WEEKS-3 MONTHS: Lung function begins to improve. 1-9 MONTHS: Coughing and shortness of breath decrease and you have more energy. 1 YEAR: Chance of heart attack is cut in half. Questions and concerns I want to ask my healthcare provider: MY THREE TOP REASONS TO QUIT: 1 2 3 SMOKING MYTH #1: I smoked during my last pregnancy and had a healthy baby, so this baby will be healthy too. FACT: Every time you smoke during pregnancy you put your baby s health at risk. If you smoked and had a healthy pregnancy in the past, that does not mean your next one will be healthy too. 5. ADVISE

CREATE A SMOKE-FREE HOME Assess your risk for secondhand smoke Tobacco smoke is harmful to everyone. There is no safe exposure to secondhand smoke, the smoke from other people's cigarettes that you breath in. You are breathing in the same smoke as the smoker. It is especially harmful to babies before and after they are born because their lungs and bodies are still growing. YES NO Does anyone smoke near you and your child? Do you allow people to smoke in your home? Do you live in a building where neighbors smoke? Do you allow smoking in your car? One in every five babies born to mothers who smoke are born too small. Being born too small is a leading cause of infant death. Babies and children who breathe secondhand smoke are more likely to experience: Ear infections Breathing problems Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Do you and your child visit places where people smoke? If you checked YES to any of the above, you and your child are exposed to secondhand smoke. SMOKING MYTH #2: There is nothing wrong with having a small baby. FACT: Babies born too early, or who weigh less than 5 pounds 8 ounces, are more likely to have serious health problems. These problems can affect your baby s health as a toddler or an adult. SMOKING MYTH #3: I am three months pregnant. There is no point in stopping now. The damage is done. FACT: There are benefits to quitting smoking at any stage of your pregnancy. However, if you quit before 16 weeks gestation, your risk of preterm birth will be similar to that of a nonsmoker. How to protect yourself and family from secondhand smoke: Ask family and friends not to smoke around you or your child. Support family and friends who want to stop smoking. Decide to have a smoke-free home and car, and ask your family and friends to respect your decision. Get rid of all ashtrays from your home (inside and outside). Ask family members to choose a jacket that they will always wear when smoking. This jacket should only be worn when smoking and never around your baby. 7. ADVISE

KEYS FOR QUITTING Get Ready! Think about how quitting will help you and your family. Set a quit date and stick to it. Get rid of ALL tobacco products and ashtrays in your home, car and/or workplace. Keep your list of reasons to quit where you will see it every day. MY QUIT PLAN: My reasons to quit: Learn New Skills and Behaviors. Change some of your daily habits to lower your chances of smoking. Plan something fun to do every day. Practice new ways to relax. Find a different way to occupy your hands, mouth and mind. Think about your reasons for quitting. Skills/Behaviors I can use to help myself quit: Be Confident! Believing that you can quit is most important. Giving yourself credit for other successes in your life will help build your self-confidence to quit smoking. Your confidence will help you resist the urge to smoke. Get Support and Help. Tell your family, friends and coworkers you are quitting and ask them to check in on you. Ask family, friends and coworkers who smoke to quit with you, or at least not to smoke around you. Talk to women who have quit smoking before, during or after pregnancy. For free help, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669). I am confident that I can quit: Of course I am! I am not 100% confident yet, but I am ready to believe in myself more and more each day. Friends and family who can help me: My county tobacco cessation program: SMOKING MYTH #4: Smoking relaxes me, and being relaxed is better for me and my baby. FACT: You may feel calmer when smoking, but what happens inside your body is quite the opposite. Smoking speeds up your blood pressure. Every puff of a cigarette also increases the carbon monoxide in your bloodstream, making less oxygen available to your baby. SMOKING MYTH #5: Quitting smoking will be too stressful on my baby. FACT: Continuing to smoke during pregnancy harms your baby. Quitting smoking does not put extra stress on your baby. 9. ASSESS

KEEPING TRACK OF YOUR PROGRESS DAY DATE DID YOU SMOKE? REWARD/REMINDER (Y/N) Many people who stop smoking for six months stay quit forever. The first three months after you quit are the toughest. Many people slip and go back to smoking during this time. Take active steps to track your progress. Give yourself a little reward every day that you don t smoke. Fill in these tables to help you stay quit for the next two weeks. If you slip on some days, write down a reminder of your goal for quitting. Make as many copies as you need to keep track of your progress. MON TUES WED THUR FRI DAY DATE DID YOU SMOKE? REWARD/REMINDER (Y/N) SAT SUN MON TUES WED THUR FRI SAT SUN SMOKING MYTH #6: Smoking fewer cigarettes during pregnancy is good enough. FACT: No level of smoking is safe. Even a few cigarettes a day means harmful chemicals will reach your baby and damage your health. Quitting at any time during pregnancy is likely to reduce the bad effects of smoking on your baby. 11. QUIT SMOKING CONTRACT I AM I CAN DO ANYTHING I PUT MY MIND TO. I WILL RAISE MY BABY TO BE AS AS I AM. QUIT DATE: Patient Signature: Healthcare Provider Signature: Today s Date: QUIT SMOKING CHECKLIST I have talked to my healthcare provider about the benefits of quitting. I have listed out my reasons why I am going to quit. I understand the possible withdrawal symptoms. I know what makes me want to smoke. I have a plan to throw away all of my tobacco products and have decided on something for my mouth and hands that will replace them (i.e. mouth: gum, straws, cinnamon stick & hands: hold pencil, do a crossword, draw or doodle). I have learned about secondhand smoke. I have a plan for a smoke-free house or a smoke-free space. I have two friends or family members that will help support me. I know how to talk to them to let them know how I would like to be supported. I have enrolled in the Quit Line and/or SmokeFreeMom. I understand that quitting smoking is hard. If I have tried to stop smoking before, I can learn what helped and what didn't work, and am more likely to be successful now. WHEN IT GETS HARD I'LL REMEMBER: 31. ARRANGE
