Psychology Major Tracking Sheet AB Requirements Eleven (11) courses in psychology are required for the major. The major is devised to provide breadth and depth, a small group course in psychology, and familiarity with the quantitative techniques and research methods used in the field. I. Breadth: Psychology 101, at least 2 survey courses that cover major areas of the field, quantitative techniques, and research methods. PSY 101 or AP or IPC credit (per Trinity guidelines; 11 additional courses are required if AP or IPC credit received) 2 Survey Courses in the following areas: Survey Course in the Biological (B 106/107) or Cognitive (C 102) Area Survey Course in the Abnormal/Health (A 105), Developmental (D 103), or Social (S 104) Area II. Depth: See Courses Listed by Area of Depth; can include 1 independent study course: 393, 394, 493, or 494. At least 3 courses in 2 areas where a survey course was completed. At least 1 course beyond the survey level must be in the Biological or Cognitive area and at least 1 course beyond the survey level must be in the Abnormal/Health, Developmental, or Social area. (Area: A B C D S) (Area: A B C D S) (Area: A B C D S) III. Instruction in Small Groups: At least 1 seminar. It is recommended that the seminar be taken in an area where a survey course was completed. Research Methods (take after quantitative techniques): PSY 202 or PSY 302-315 series, Course #: Title: VI. Additional Electives to bring total to 11 courses: Of the 11 courses required for the major, at least 9 must be taken at Duke; others, if approved, may count toward the 34 credits needed for graduation but will not count toward the major. At most, only 1 independent study course (393, 394, 493, or 494) may count toward the depth requirement and only 2 may count for the major. Additional course if AP or IPC credit was earned for PSY 101, Course #: Title: BS Additional Requirements: The BS degree requires completion of all requirements for the AB degree plus additional courses in the quantitative studies (QS) and natural sciences (NS). VII. Additional Quantitative Studies (QS): *Psychology 201/201L, the statistics class in psychology, will not enable students to enroll in Statistical Science 210 or 340, and students should review the Statistical Science website for the prerequisites for these classes. Two (2) required NS courses in psychology: Can count towards the courses required for the AB degree, or if not used to meet AB requirements, toward the 5 NS elective classes required for the BS degree. IX. Natural Sciences (NS) Electives: 5 elective courses from an approved list (see Natural Sciences Elective Options) that meet the following criteria: (a) classes come from at least two external departments, and (b) at least 3 of the 5 are at or above the 200 level. Courses cross-listed with psychology and another department do not count as a second department.
