PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS PHILOSOPHY Physical Education Philosophy The Belén Jesuit Physical Education Department's philosophy is concerned with developing the students' total physical and mental well being as well as preparing the student for life in our ever changing world. Our goal is to provide each student with an opportunity to assess his personal fitness, to develop skills used in various sports and to acquire an understanding of physical education. Our belief is that if the student fully engages in the process of developing athletic skills, improving personal fitness and acquiring an understanding of physical education, this will enable the student to enjoy a more productive life. We recognize our unique contributions to the curriculum as no other area concerns itself with the physical development of the student. It is our aim to develop young men through physical activity and sports competition who are confident in their abilities, who display good Christian values and who are willing and able to be a leader both on and off the field of play. Health Philosophy The philosophy of the Health Department is to provide the students with the opportunity to develop and enhance critical life management skills necessary to make good sound decisions and take positive action toward good mental, physical, and emotional health. It is realized that exposure to topics such as nutrition, smoking, abuse, stress management, and first aid will enable the students to develop in a solid base for their own health standards. OBJECTIVES The Department's objectives stem from the philosophy mentioned above. 1. Teaching the students rules, regulations, and basic knowledge of different sports activities. 2. Developing leadership, fellowship, teamwork, sportsmanship and christian values. 3. Promoting physical growth, development, and maintenance of physical fitness through 1
activities that develop strength, vigor, vitality, skills and coordination. 4. Developing social competence in the areas of relationships with others, cooperation, competition, tolerance, ethical character, and recognition of the fundamental worth of each individual. 5. COURSE OFFERINGS PED 5100 TEAM SPORTS I 0.5 Credit Promotion Credit for 7th Grade The purpose of Team Sports I is to provide the student with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and strategies of team sports play, to develop skills in those selected sports, and to maintain or improve their physical fitness. The content of this course should include but not be limited to the knowledge and application of skills, techniques, strategies, rules and safety practices necessary to participate in team sports. PED 5200 TEAM SPORTS II 0.5 Credit Promotion Credit for 8th Grade The purpose of Team Sports II is to provide the student with the opportunity to acquire knowledge of strategies of team sports play, to develop skills in selected team sports, and to maintain or improve their personal fitness. The content of this course should include, but not be limited to, the knowledge and application of skills, techniques, strategies, rules, and safety practices necessary to participate in selected team sports. PED 5400 PERSONAL FITNESS 1.00 Credit Promotion Credit for 10th Grade PERSONAL FITNESS The purpose of Personal Fitness is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop an individual optimal level of physical fitness, acquire knowledge of physical fitness concepts, and to understand the significance of lifestyle on one's health and fitness. The content of this course will include: knowledge of the importance of physical fitness, assessment of health related and skill related components of physical fitness, knowledge of health problems associated with inadequate fitness levels, knowledge and application of biomechanical and physiological principals to improve and maintain the health and skill related components of physical fitness, knowledge of the safety practices associated with physical fitness the psychological values of fitness including stress management, sound nutritional practices and consumer related issues that relate to physical fitness. PED 5502 INDIVIDUAL & DUAL SPORTS 1 & 11 PED 5550 LIFE MANAGEMENT SKILLS 1.00 Credit Graduation Credit for Physical Education INDIVIDUAL & DUAL SPORTS I & II The primary purpose of Individual and Dual Sports is to prepare the student with a well developed and well rounded program in physical education that could be used for an entire lifetime. Individual and Dual Sports are well suited for adult life since they require little or no equipment, can be performed individually or with a partner, and the level of intensity can easily be adapted to the individual needs, their ability and their skill level. LIFE MANAGEMENT SKILLS Life Management Skills focuses on the relationships that exist between physical, mental, emotional, and social health. Students will learn that their decisions affect all of these areas of health. They will discover that the decisions they make can promote their health, their enjoyment of life now and in the future. Healthy decisions not only help prevent diseases but also help students feel good physically and enable them to energetically do those tasks they choose. Healthy decisions help students feel good about themselves, feel comfortable with others, and cope with the challenges of life. Healthy decisions help students choose and build positive relationships. Throughout the health course, students are provided many 4
opportunities to apply their understanding of health knowledge. By improving decision making skills, they learn and practice ways to make healthy choices, they learn how taking responsibility for their own health has positive effects not only for themselves but also for others around them. COMPREHENSIVE FITNESS This course is aimed at effectively helping students achieve fitness goals through class work that increases understanding of the fitness principles. Comprehensive Fitness will through laboratory and field work improve the fitness and health fundamentals acquired at earlier levels. 5
