The numbers keep on rising Dear Friend, This year, more than 76,000 people will learn they have melanoma. Another 10,000 people will lose their battles. And nearly 1 million people will live with melanoma everyday. Last year, Miles for Melanoma events raised $1.7 million to support the Melanoma Research Foundation s vision to create better outcomes for patients. What is melanoma? Melanoma is cancer. It begins in the melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells that color the skin, hair and eyes. It is most often found on the skin, but can appear anywhere on the body, including in your eye, mouth and other areas. The majority of melanomas found on the skin are related to sun and/or artificial UV exposure. When caught early, melanoma is treatable. But when caught late, the odds decrease significantly. Where do the funds go? The Melanoma Research Foundation is working to transform melanoma from one of the deadliest cancers to one of the most treatable. We offer support services to patients and caregivers. We fund research to find the most promising treatment breakthroughs. We educate the public about melanoma and the importance of sun safety and early detection. All funds raised through Miles for Melanoma support our vision to create better outcomes for patients.
