This learning package focuses on teaching students key information about self-esteem. Students will learn what self-esteem is, why self-self-esteem is important, how self-esteem is developed, and how students can boost selfesteem. Why Is Self-Esteem Important? Why is it Important? What Is Self-Esteem? Self-esteem is how you feel or think about yourself. We all have it. Some people have high self-esteem others have low self-esteem. Someone with a positive or healthy level of self-esteem feels proud about who they are. They understand that they are not perfect but feel good about themselves and their appearance. They value themselves as a person. On the other hand, someone that has low selfesteem doesn t think highly of themselves. They may be very self-critical (hard on themselves) on their appearance and/or intelligence. They tend to be very worried about what others think of them. Having a healthy level of self-esteem is very important. The amount of selfesteem a person has will have an effect on their life. Those with a positive selfesteem are more likely to be successful in their personal and professional lives. It becomes clearer on how self-esteem influences a person s life when looking at the many benefits that positive self-esteem can have: 1) Being secure and confident assist with building healthy relationships with others. 2) Believing in yourself gives a person more courage to try new things and better deal with new life challenges. 3) When you respect yourself others tend to respect you more. 4) Because you are secure with yourself and not worried what others think, you are more independent and less likely follow peer pressure. 5) Because you care about yourself, you are more likely to make healthier life choices about your body and mind. The major source of our self-esteem is developed by the experiences we have. Positive (good) or negative (bad) life experiences tend to influence how each of us feel and view ourselves. Having many positive influences and experiences in our lives, help us build a favorable and healthy feeling of selfworth (how we value ourselves). Interestingly, we start off life with no awareness of self-esteem. We know this because babies don t have self-esteem. They don t see themselves in a negative or positive light. They are not worried about letting out loud burps, drooling all over themselves, or how their diapers look or smell. As a baby develops, the parents and people close around him or her begin to help build and influence a baby s self-esteem. This is done by people giving the baby positive encouragement, feedback, and love. These positive experiences tend to lead to a positive self-esteem. If the baby is having lots of negative experiences and influences, then these will likely cause a negative or low self-esteem. 6. What is a major source in which we develop self-esteem from? 7. The self-esteem process continues as a baby develops into a child. As a child begins to interact with more people such as coaches, teachers, friends, and classmates, there will be more influences on a child s self-esteem. These people often play an important role in helping boost a child s self-esteem. This may be done by them pointing out a child s good qualities, providing encouragement to try and not give up on things, and by making them feel proud of themselves and their accomplishments. If the child is having negative experiences such as being made fun of, being put down, not being encouraged, not being made to feel proud of their accomplishments or themselves, then their selfesteem will likely be damaged. To better understand how self-esteem is built or damaged in each of us, it helpful to look at self-esteem as representing a full bucket of water. Anytime, you have a negative experience or influences a hole is created in the bucket of water and self-esteem leaks out. The more negative experiences, the more holes are created and the more self-esteem spills out of the person. As we become older, we play a bigger role in developing our own self-esteem. This is especially true when we are aware of what self-esteem is, how it is developed, and the things that can affect it. It is never too late to change our self-esteem. Those that have low self-esteem can learn to boost it by themselves and/or with profession help. The following are some key things that are helpful in boosting one s self-esteem. BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND. It is important to treat yourself well and do things that are good for you. A best friend accepts you for who you are. Remember that there are things about yourself you can't change; you should accept and love these things because they are part of you. We are all unique (special, one of kind) and should be willing to embrace our uniqueness. Appreciate what you have, and don t focus on what is not perfect about you or your life. This only wastes time and punches holes in your self-esteem bucket. If you can make healthy changes in your life that make you feel better, it can be beneficial to do so. A simple exercise routine, eating right, dressing nicely, and being well groomed can all can be helpful. SELECT THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO SPEND TIME WITH. Find people that are positive. and encouraging. Ignore and stay away from people who put you down or treat you badly. These people will only hurt your self-esteem and punch large holes in the bucket. DEVELOP YOUR TALENTS. We all have talents. Sometimes, it takes a little help from others to find them. Thus, don t be afraid to ask family and friends to help identify them. As you develop your talents, you will gain confidence and feel proud of your accomplishments. SET GOALS AND WORK TO ACHIEVE THEM. When we accomplish things, we tend to feel better about ourselves; it builds confidence and pride. Therefore, set positive goals in your life. You can start off with small goals. Write the goal down, create a plan to accomplish it, and set a time frame. When you complete the goal, reward yourself in a positive way and reflect on your accomplishment. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND DO THE RIGHT THING. Being true to yourself, empowers a person and gives them control of who they truly are. If you stand up for your beliefs, yourself, and do the right thing, you will feel proud of your actions and others will respect you. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may still struggle with your selfesteem. If you continue to feel really bad and things just don t seem to be getting better, it might be worth seeking professional help. Counsellors and psychologists have lots of knowledge on self-esteem. They will be able to give you many suggestions and strategies that might further assist you in building self-esteem. They also may be able to help identify other problems that are causing a person to feel bad about themselves. 6. As a person develops their talents, what do they gain? 7.
