Page 3 Taylor Zmoos Receives PFAF and ASDA Awards Taylor Zmoos (D3) has received two awards. He is the recipient of the 2014 Dental Scholarship Award, given by the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation (PFAF) to dental students with outstanding dental student leadership and academic achievement. Taylor also received the 2014 Award of Excellence from the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) in recognition of outstanding dedication and service. (Above): Taylor Zmoos and Dean David Johnsen holding Taylor s two award certificates. Dr. John S. Casko Honored by the American Board of Orthodontics Dr. John S. Casko, professor emeritus at the UI College of Dentistry, was awarded the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award, the highest honor given by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO), on April 27, 2014, at the Excellence in Orthodontics Awards Ceremony, held in New Orleans, La. The award, created in 1936 to commemorate the achievements of Dr. Albert H. Ketcham, is given annually to an individual who has made a notable contribution to the science and art of orthodontics. Dr. Casko, a past president of the ABO, is professor emeritus and former B.F. and Helen E. Dewel Endowed Chair in Clinical Orthodontics at the UI College of Dentistry. Dr. Casko joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 1976. He served as head of the Department of Orthodontics from 1976 to 2002. In 2000, he was named the B.F. and Helen E. Dewel Endowed Chair in Clinical Orthodontics, the first endowed chair at the UI College of Dentistry. He retired from the University of Iowa in 2013. The ABO is very pleased to recognize Dr. Casko with this prestigious award, said Dr. Marvin Kastrop, the 2013-14 president of the ABO. Dr. Casko has contributed greatly to the specialty of orthodontics. He has said that his greatest satisfaction is seeing how successful his residents have become and how much they contribute back to dentistry and the specialty of orthodontics. In addition, his sphere of influence extends beyond the University of Iowa. Many orthodontists from all over the world have benefited from his life s work. Dr. Casko received both his D.D.S. and M.S. in orthodontics from Georgetown University in 1964 and 1968, respectively. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. He has been an ABO Diplomate since 1981 and recertified in 1999. This is the highest award I can get as an orthodontist, and it is very special to me because it symbolizes the recognition of my peers, Dr. Casko said. This award is a wonderful complement to the Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers and Research Award that I received in 2008. To be included on the list of past recipients of the Ketcham Award is incredibly humbling. This list also brings to mind friends and colleagues who received this award, but are no longer with us. So many wonderful people have received this award; I am grateful to be included among them.

Page 10 Allamakee County Students Visit the College of Dentistry (Above): Margaret Baudino (D2) provides one of the visitors with assistance. The College of Dentistry was pleased to welcome nine fifth- through eighth-grade students from Allamakee County on Friday, May 2. The students are participants in a program entitled Project SEALED. The Project SEALED program is a component of the Better Futures for Iowa initiative from the UI Provost s Office for which Dr. Dan Caplan, chair, Preventive and Community Dentistry, is the principal investigator. Cathy Skotowski, clinical assistant professor in Pediatric Dentistry, greeted the students and provided a brief interactive Turning Point PPT on dental careers and an overview of oral health concepts, followed by Dr. Caplan s PowerPoint instruction on placing a composite. Under Dr. Caplan s supervision, the students were able to move to the Bench Lab for a hands-on experience placing composite in cavity prepped teeth using dental instruments, a curing light and a slow speed hand piece to polish and finish the restoration. Second-year dental students, Margaret Baudino, Katie Lee, and Joshua Orgill assisted Dr. Caplan throughout the exercise. Dr. Natalia Restrepo-Kennedy provided the video about how to place the composite restorations, and she and Janet Glenn provided the supplies and equipment for the hands-on exercise. Page 11 College of Dentistry Participates in Lincoln Elementary Health Fair The College of Dentistry participated in a health fair at Lincoln Elementary school recently. Kasey Befeler (Ed Media) and Drew Wise (Clinic Administration) worked the collegiate booth. The display, Rethink Your Drink was a hit with children and parents. (Left): Kasey Befeler with her son, Asher, who attends Lincoln Elementary. Her younger son, Kaden, will be in kindergarten at Lincoln Elementary this fall. Drew was talking to a young girl who mentioned she was going to get braces. He replied, I have braces. They re not so bad. The girl smiled and Kasey could tell she felt reassured. It was just a neat moment, Kasey adds. Drew worked at Lincoln Elementary with its Before/After school program August 2009-2011, just before he was hired at the College of Dentistry. Before that, Drew says, I was working at the summer camp at Lincoln. Kasey notes that several mothers looked at the Rethink Your Drink display and said to their children, Do you see how much sugar is in that soda I let you drink?! (Right): Lincoln Elementary students peruse the Rethink Your Drink Display at the College of Dentistry booth.

Page 12 Clothing Vote: The Results Are In! Seventy-two faculty, staff and students voted on a selection of new College of Dentistry apparel last week and had many good comments and suggestions. Seventy-four percent said they would wear the apparel to work and another 21 percent said they would consider wearing the COD clothing items. Eighty percent of participants said they would wear the apparel after hours. The men s black zippered jacket took the most votes with 58 percent. Also in the top five were the ladies short-sleeved shirts, especially the black zippered shirt, which Rosemary Stanley and Jennifer Slausen, OPRM, liked. Comments and suggestions included longer short sleeves (for women), have more yellow, offer a sweater choice and it would be so easy to get up and put on one of these shirts for work! There were two winners of the College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics shirts: Eric Popp (D4) and Nina Ihrig, Dental Clinic Administration clerk. Co-workers teased Nina because she had also recently won a ham in the 80 Degree Day Contest. (We say You can t win if you don t play! ) (Above): Nina Ihrig, Dental Clinic Administration Thanks to all who participated in the voting and look for more information over the next few months about ordering COD apparel.
